I just bought this car to get me and my wrecked 944 rolling again. The engine hasn't been started for 10 years...but i do prefer this engine with only 52k miles
what would be all the right things to do to prep this old engine and waken the giant within.
Obviously a fluid transfision and total hose and belt check (timing belt especially)
any other thoughts ...i know i am going to miss something...

b4 u attempt to start the car, do the belts and hoses. Who knows if one of the belt rollers is siezed and will break the belt upon initial start up. Change fluids, and pull fuel pump relay b4 attempting to start to get the oil pressure built up a litte.
I think a low milage car that has not run in 10 years could be just as much trouble as a high milage car as far as breaking and maint. goes. Good luck and POST PICS!!!

I think there are special oils to put on there, like the kind you put on to a freshly rebuilt motor, to keep it from being dry and wearing when it first turns over. I think you can use marvel mystery oil to pour down into the cylinders (just a bit, now), but that seems hack. Talk to one of the spec guys who knows about rebuilding motors...

put a little atf or some wd40 in the cylinders and spin it around by hand a few times- then crank w/ plugs out-and a towel over the engine to keep the atf from spewing out w/ the DME relay out- then new plugs, DME back in and fire her up w/ new belt.

What Dan said, also change all the oils out, motor, power steering, trany, brake, CV joints. I would also pull the DME relay or the coil wires and crank it until the oil preasure comes up.

I have purchased several cars that the engine has set for several years. I always drain the oil, fill back with 2qts if ATF, and 3qts of 5w-30. I also put ATF in each cyl, let it set over night. Put more ATF in each cyl, and spin by hand (24MM socket on crank bolt). Drain fuel tank, and fuel pump. Old gas will varnish and lock up the pump. You can start the car with the ATF in the crank case, but DO NOT rev it up. IDLE only.

You might find that it'll leak like a sieve. I'd probably treat it like an engine you want to rebuild. Since you have to pull it from the donor car, put it on a stand, and tear it down. Replace all gaskets and seals while checking it out and 'freeing' it up every step of the way.
You don't want to throw it into your new car only to have it start dumping oil out of every crevice.

ok i took delivery - in fact got it all for $300 rather than $400
first thank you all for the great advise ....which I am following
here is what I have found
* the oil came out in clumps and milk chocolate look
* I busted the 1/2 in extension I was using to try to spin the crank by hand - frozen bad
* I disconnected the hard hose at the gas tank - it is solid with goop in it - apparantly full varnish
* Plugs are out and they have some surface rust and they are real black
* Surprisingly the oil filter came off easy but there was more milky goop there and also had surface rust on the outside
I do have the ATF soaking in the cylinders and I put a couple of quarts of oil and atf in the pan
After pulling the fuel hose and finding varnish solid in the line and breaking my extension on that frozen crank....I am tempted to take my good engine, tranny, suspension, fuel tank etc off my wrecked but awesome 44 and do a major swap and rebuild this gummed up engine over time. If not I am afraid this project will turn into a 2 year vs 6 month project to get running down the road.
Your thoughts?

You broke an extension trying to free the crank?? Not a good sign man...not a good sign. When I bought my 944 sitting under a foot of snow (had sat for God knows how long) and I tried to spin the engine by hand for the first time, it turned out to be siezed. The cylinders were scored beyond repair. Consider pulling the head and seeing whats what

I thought i would get lucky...I always do more damage than good....except this time. I will pull the engine's out of both cars and install the one I was driving a couple of months ago ...which I proudly rebuilt...
and the frozen one will then get dismanteled.
What I will also have to do....is pull fuel lines and fuel pump and gas tank as well....this is going to be fun in the garage.
