He should go to jail for life for being in possesion of a car that may or may not be the subject of an online discussion that thinks it may or may not be a stolen car, due to unknown and hearsay circumstances.

WOW,..........
4 pages of speculation and legal advice. Thanks????
As I said before, the guy who has this car is NOT the guy suspected of being the thief.
Anyway, I'm the original poster. I was trying to help find out where this 951 really belongs. You'd want fellow Rennlisters to do that for you if your car was stolen, right? It's the right thing to do.
The report of the car's situation was given to me over the phone. The guy who called me was referred to me because I'm kind of the "go to" guy for 944's in San Diego.
He wanted help with info on the car, which was dropped off in front of his shop. He wasn't selling the car or buying it. As I said, no paperwork, no keys, no plates, broken off VIN tag. The gentleman had already called the cops and they were unable to find anything at all on the car, i.e., no report of it being stolen, no record of it at DMV. I KNEW the car had to belong to someone and they were probably local.
After my initial post, a fellow Rennlister emailed me a copy of a CARFAX report on the car. It had been registered in Kansas, then reported stolen in Kansas, then retitled in 1994 or so. I called Kansas DMV this morning, who referred me to the Kansas Highway Patrol. No help.
I then called the San Diego Police Dept. Because of the car's location, they said to call the Sherrif! So I called the Sherrif. He did a national check, NCIC, and told me the car had not been reported stolen and had no Calif DMV record going back 7 years.
For all we know, the rightful owner could be in jail. He could have died. He could have not been able to afford to fix the car. He might have abandoned the car at a friend's house and they got tired of storing it. Who knows?
The point of the original post was to serve the 944 community by spending some of my time to find the owner of a 944 that I strongly felt was stolen.
....and I'll do it again if the situation arises, because I believe Rennlist can be a powerful tool in combatting theft, even if there are some jacka$$es who post here. ( Not you, Frank.)
Case closed.....

BTW,
This post got over a thousand hits in less than 4 days.......so it's clear that Rennlist has the power to help return cars and parts to their rightful owners, and that Rennlisters are interested in doing so.
