Yea, I did my homework. Everybuddy just says to fill it with some type of bondo, then sand it. Would bondo be to harsh for the dash? What would be the best filler?

Perhaps sand / remove any loose material and fill with epoxy, then sand back to level?

All you want is a smooth surface to wrap with the leather...

The hard part will be marking out the panels of the new leather cover - take a look at the 928 leathershop dash here;

Detailed stuff!

Looks like one big panel on top, one big panel on the upper/front RHS, and hmm... the rest is smaller panels to fit each patch...

Try mapping these papers using larger pieces of paper - newspaper might do, but I think you can get specific upholstery/dressmaking paper on the roll.

Stitching is something I know nothing about... have you got anything in mind there?

Besides some small cracks, everything else is really smooth, and nothing is lose. Eh, not much for stitching, I was hoping I could do it without that, but I might have to.

howsabout instead of sanding, you cover it in a thin foam pad or batting, then cover that with your leather.

Just a thought.

Like buying a sheet of thin foam? I thought of that, but I think it would be to hard and frustrating, lol.

Oh yea. All i'd be doing is filling the cracks with some type of filler, then sand the filler so it's even with the dash, right?

The vinyl can go on as one piece because it can stretch and shrink with heat to fit various contours. Leather... not so much!

I tried bondo on an early dash once. I was trying to use the info on the 928 board about how they said to use fiberglass bondo and texture spray. Well the fiberglass bondo didn't work at all. Definitely use that regular pasty bondo, not the fiberglass & resin!

But at any rate good luck, I'm sure you'll make something that looks nice!

Right, a solid/flat dash will be needed to get started...but, really the prep is gonna be the easy part...

1) you absolutely need to stitch the leather to make it look any good - otherwise the joins will stand out horribly, and you can see from the 928ls dash that there's a lot of joins...

2) You'll need to measure the cover so that it's a stretch-on fit - i.e. the give in the leather allows the cover to be pulled over the dash and then held in place possibly with some glue and brackets... I think if you measure the panels without taking into account the width of the stitched joins it might be just right.

Having done some homework on your behalf, the guy to ask would be a fella called Paul Champagne who is a user on this board (username "Champagne") but as he does it professionally his point of view might be a little *advanced*...

I've thought about this mod myself a bit - and considered going the way you are, but I've never really gotten on with sewing that much... I was considering taking all the measurements and then have a professional tailor/upholsterer put it together...

Well, I was messing around with how i'm going to put the leather on, and everything. And soon learn it was far beyond my abilities, lol. So I E-Mailed Rob and asked him if he could do it with my leather, and dash. Hopefully since I have my own leather, it might cut the price down.
