Smile Porsche 944... Crashworthy?

Can anyone attest to the safety of the 944?

No wrecks myself, but I have seen some pretty bad pictures of 944's that were wrecked and the owners have walked away.

I read this when I first bought my 944: The story about the Porsche 944 that saved my life, and which served as the inspiration for the creation of this website. http://www.944-world.com/agoodcar.html
Legoland951 has a lot of insights on the subject too.

Guy named Royalty here a while back got hit by a GMC 2500 truck, the front of the car was pretty hosed but him and his passenger (his mom) were alright.

The truck ended up in a ditch sideways about 300 ft away.

here's the link.

My brother was hit by a dump truck, walked away. 83 944. I was hit by someone running a stop sign on the back right, spun around, walked away (1997). Hit by someone running a red light (2000), back left, spun around, walked away. IMHO the car is solid in more ways then one.

I have been in several higher speed impacts (35-65) in my various 944s and I have to say they are quite resilient and I have never had anything more than the typical aches and pains you'd have from any collision.

If you have ever seen, touched, lifted the torque tube out of the car, (Frank/Legoland951 describes it as a "battering ram") you will know what make the car so safe in frontal impacts.

I remember years ago reading that the 924 was originally engineered by Porsche for VW as part of a automotive safety project, to be a VW sports car. VW abandoned the project and the rest is history.

Back in 1996 my father was involved in an offset head on with chevy pick-up. The car was torn up and my father came away without a scratch. I have also seen 3-4 crashes in 944 race cars. Most reciently one went into wall backwards at 70+ mph. Word it hit the wall and then bounced 2-3 feet in the air away from the wall. Unfortunatly the driver did suffer some injuries, but looking that car afterward I think it did a very nice job protecting the driver as there was no intrusion into passenger compartment and not a drop of fuel spilled. I have always been impressed by the crash worthness of the basic design. This does not make you invincible in a 944, but they are alot strong and safer than they apear on the outside.
