Default have some questions on a 911 (964)

I know that this is a 944 forum, but maybe you can answer a few questions reagrding 964(911)

I have had my 944 S2 for aprox 4 months, I really like this car, and as this is my first porsche i have only good opinion on it, but per haps there will be an opportunity to get a 964

so i just want to know maybe it is worse than my S2 maybe it will be a dissapointment, unfortunately there are very few 964 hee in Latvia so there is no way of taking it for a try

what i'd like to know is:
#1 does the 964 have a limited slip differential? (as a default)
#2 I have heard that 911's are harder to control, their handling is pretty bad, is that true
#3 which of them is better, I am interested only in a coupe, a carrera 4 or a carrera 2, better in terms of handling, acceleration, reliability, fuel consuption, availability of parts etc

what I want from that car is power and good handling while powersliding (drifting)

The handeling of a 964 will be much different than a 944. I would not say that the 964s are bad, it just takes a more aware driver to keep them on the road when at the limit. The 944 is more foregiving. The 964 is more friendly than an SC though. My recommendation would be to stay away from an awd 964. The system is very complex and expensive. The 993 system and that used on the 996 and 997 is much more reliable and cost effective.

#1 - no
#2 - the 964 is harder to control, and feels less stuck to the road. However it handles fine, just needs more effort.
#3 Better?
handling (drifting): I can't say, depends on the driver... 964s would be hard to drift properly.
acceleration: 964 easily
reliability: In GENERAL, the 944
fuel consuption is very close... 964 has a bigger engine but lighter chassis
availability of parts: both cars share parts from many other "sister" models, and parts are available. But 944 parts will always be cheaper!

I personally like 964s looks and I too have heard bad things of the AWD 4 models. Going from a 944 to a 911 is quite different since the 944 is perfectly balanced and the 964 has a heavy rear end. You must learn how to drive a 911 because if you don't understand the car your drift will easily turn into a spin. If you want the 944s balance with more power go 951, its easy to get more power out of a 951 which would make it even quicker than a NA 964.

Might want to get opinions from the 964 board too.

Your picture is of an RS America (or ROW RS), which is a fabulous car.

911s can be equally rewarding to drive. The aircooled engines make heat much faster, but the defrosters suck. The 911 will always be a "true porsche" to the uniformed public and always have a better resale value.

I believe limited slip was standard on all RS models, but an extra cost option on the regular cars. As for handling, it is different, but not in a bad way - just in a different way. You want to power slide? Get the 911 with crappy tires. It has more torque (larger displacement) than the S2. Otherwise you'll need a lot more power (find a video of the RUF Yellowbird...)

you need to throttle through a turn, if you take a corner too quick and let off the gas you will spin out.

I had a 911 (a 2.4 with mechanical injection) before the 951 I own now. Everyone who is into Porsches should own a 911 once in their lives. It is the car that defined Porsche and is one of the great classic cars of all time. I loved mine and only sold it because I wanted to try another flavor.

That being said, they are more exotic and having a knowlegable mechanic is important.
