I have thought long and hard on this one..
I will be adding another 928 to my garage sometime this year and will be making a bigger step in both career and everyday life all at the same time. My girlfriend and I are looking to move to San Francisco early this year and will be purchasing a condo sometime in the summer. Around the same time, I am considering putting my car up for sale to make room for another 928.
The 944's motor was rebuilt at 129,000 miles due to a piston ring failure on the #3 cylinder. All rings were destroyed in that cylinder. I sent the block out to get rehoned and cleaned up. I had the pistons re-ringed and various work done internally. The crankshaft has been cross-drilled and magnafluxed to ensure there are no stress cracks that would later cause any problems. The car has been autocrossed before the engine failure and only once after. Of course it was done well after the break-in period of the rebuild.
As far as suspension goes, the car has KYB strut inserts and rear shocks, 968 M030 rear sway bar with a 944 S2 26.8mm front. The springs are rated at 220 lbs. and new tires all the way around that are 215/60/R15 Bridgestone Potenza G009. The exhaust is a 2.5" Flowmaster Super 40 muffler connected to a Magnaflow high-flow cat welded in place of where the old one used to be.
A rear seat delete was done to the car and a harness bar installed. The interior is very clean and there are no cracks in the dash. I am trying to figure out a gremlin that is causing the coolant temperature gauge to run hot. I am most certainly positive that it's the gauge or sender itself since EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT ON THE COOLING SYSTEM FROM THE RADIATOR, TO HOSES, WATER PUMP AND TEMPERATURE SENDERS have been replaced with new parts.
I will be bumping this thread later on as events transpire to confirm when the car will be going up for sale. As for now, it is definitely in the cards and will be giving homage to a 1983 or 1984 928S.
I will miss the car dearly if it goes though. I have spent a lot of money on cleaning up the previous owner's mistakes and idiocy.

Here is a complete list of what has been done to the car. I have no receipts of labor from mechanics shops since I am a DIY kind of guy:
Total Engine overhaul at 129,000:
-Cross-drill and Magnaflux Crankshaft
-Honed Cylinders
-Solvent Dip to clean up oil passages and engine crankcase
Work was done by Motorworks San Diego, CA
Rebuilt Cylinder Head at 126,000:
-3-angle valve grind
-Silicon Bronze Valve guides
-Checked and confirmed the valve springs are still good
-Solvent dip
-New Sachs Clutch Kit at the time of Overhaul
Suspension/Brakes
-KYB shocks
-26.8mm 944 S2 front Sway Bar
-19mm 968 MO30 rear sway bar 3-stage adjustable
-220 lb springs
-1986 951 Spindles
-4-piston caliper 951 Brake Conversion
-ATE Blue DOT4 brake fluid
Interior
-Rear seat delete with black carpet
-No cracks in dash
-Possible defective Coolant Temp. Gauge

I think it is good that you are going to sell your 944. Based on your behavior in that 944 bashing thread on the 928 forum its obvious you have more of a love for the 928 models. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I think we are all one big happy group of fellow porsche owners.

Let me warn you about this car hobby. You might be older than I am, but I've owned about 21 cars in the past 12 years I've been driving. The ONE thing I suggest is, don't get too many of the same car. If you're tired of your 944, then that's fine, but to get another car that's nearly identical? I know all too well that every car has it's personality differences, even between two nearly identical cars. But at the end of the day, you'll have 2 Porsche 928s... one will probably be better than the other one, and then what would the point be of having the other one? If you're going to take up space in your garage, why not get something different? A second Porsche 928 is just going to be more of the same...
How about a Porsche 914, or a Porsche 911? Or maybe venture to a different brand like a Volvo P1800 or a Fiat X-1/9, or a Corvette, or an MR2, or maybe an old classic American muscle car? Or perhaps a wicked 12 cyl Jaguar convertible???
At one time, I owned 4 of the exact same cars... it seemed cool at the time, but where's the diversity?!

why would a 928 be any less reliable than a 944 in the same condition? 928s are just more expensive to maintain so a lot of them are probable not well maintained and **** starts breaking, same with 944s.

Yea a modded 951 drives just like a regular 944 Turbo. It just accelerates quicker and blows up faster.
My mind will not change about getting a 928. My family has had 2 928s over the past 23 years. The only reason why we got rid of one is because it was our family car since 1985 and I outgrew the back seat 10 years later after my father bought it. Nevertheless to say we purchased another in 2001 and have not had one second thought about buying it. Both cars were reliable as daily drivers and the red one sitting in the garage right now is exclusively used on Friday, Saturday and Sunday ventures. Reliable? Completely!
That car has not let me down. In fact my 944 has let me down more than the 928. I dumped almost 4,000 dollars into that motor to keep the car on the road. And now, the next person that wants to buy it is going to be just plain lucky due to the amount of work and dedication I put into that car to make it what it is today.
Some of you skeptics complain about 928s and say the 944 is such a better car. Let me ask you something. Have you ever owned, driven, worked on a 928? I didn't think so.
Both of these marques have a cult following and those who like to spit out derogatory comments when comparing both of these cars to eachother. Let's not forget that the 928 was THE FLAGSHIP Porsche from 1977-1995. The 944? Definitely not one. Nevertheless, both are still PORSCHES.
This thread is to see if there are any other Rennlisters interested in picking up a 944 that can be used as either a commuter car or a reliable track car. This is not a 928 bashing thread so take it somewhere else. Thank you. And yes I am still part of this peaceful 944 community. What goes on in OT stays in OT.
