Best $5K fun car = 944. Best $10K fun car = ...

There's a 2000 S2000 on cars.com right now with 100K miles for $10,900 or so. I'm sure they've left in some bargaining room. It looks very good, I'd want to make sure it didn't have a salvage title or something like that. But in general, 2000 or 2001's with high mileage are cheap.

Seriously, I have both. I drive the 951 when it's going to rain (better wet tires)or I need extra space. With the top up, the S2000 has roughly the same acceleration, but is more responsive and easier to drive hard (I always feel like I have to "hustle" the 951 around). With the top down, there's nothing better in the price range.

Yeah, it's probably foolish to not consider a 'vette, but for some reason the styling has never done it for me. To me, something about the huge rear end and overall plastic-ness negates the many positive things about them.

What do you guys think about an early ('97-'98) BMW M Roadster? 240 hp, 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, and I actually like the looks of the early body style better than the Z4 roadster (but the Z4 coupe is stunning, reminiscent of the Jag XKE).

When you looking at cars, I have found that asking for opinions or options on buying a car isn't my favorite thing to do. It leads to cars that you are quickly introduced to, and wowed off the bat...thus being sucked in rapidly. I didn't ask for suggestions when getting a 944. It's a car I saw, learned about for close to 2 years...and finally decided I wanted one. I liked the car myself, and no one told me to check them out.
Finding a car all on your own, that you like is the best thing. I feel that if you have to ask for opinions on what to get, you need not get anything. I don't mean any of this in a personal way or trying to talk down, just voicing how I feel about these topics. People that switch cars often, or buy a car because someone else likes it are whimsical people. Buying something because someone else likes it, doesn't guarantee you will.
Find a car you really like and can afford. It's possible, just look. Most of the cars in this thread, they're nice cars...but me personally, no matter what the argument was, wouldn't buy any of them. I just don't see myself liking them. If you can, more power to you. But I think the reward is in finding it on your own.

Me too! However I value the opinions of other 944 owners because we're coming from the same place and I'm willing to bet every one of us has posed the "what's next?" question in our minds. It's all in the name of research (plus I think it's kind of a fun topic).

Love that car. They are very fast at the track too. Very rigid. I saw them race at Phoenix International a couple of years back in the Rolex series.

Porsch, Audi, Toyota, Nissan are all good but I would not go with a BMW in the last ten years. Everyone I know has had a problem with the car that is more of a pain then a joy. Yes the 944 has its problems but for the money and mostly the problems are minor this car just gets up and goes where at the BMW may have a dealer issue.
