Default Those with oil temperature gages

I would like to know those of you who have oil temperature gages, how much temperature lag there is between the coolant temperature and the oil temperature. So if the coolant takes 10 minutes to get to operating temperature, how many more minutes does it take for the oil to reach it's operating temperature.

I'm sure this depends on ambient temps, so maybe give me an idea when it's 80 degrees outside and 30 degrees outside.

Just curious.

I have an oil temp gauge in both my GTi 1.8T and 924S. Based on my experience, it takes about 2x or 3x as long for the oil to reach operating temp, depending on load on the engine, ambient temps, etc.

Yep the oil get hot much slower. I just drove about 140 miles each way today and at 80 miles an hour in 35 degree air my oil temp never got above 140 till i got into town and slowed down. Now at 80 miles and hour in 80 degree temp I am happy if I can keep my oil under 185 or so but depending on humidity, 200 or 210 was not uncommon.

I highly recommend an oil temp gauge.

What is the normal operating range for oil temperature in these cars? In my old VW the oil temps would get upwards of 300 degrees when on track.

Normal operating range I'd say is 180-230 degrees for street use. 180 on highway and 210-230 in stop and go driving depending on ambient temperature.

That is about my experience but I am ALWAYS nervous when the temp gets over 220.

If you use red line oil they say that their oil will work up to 280 degrees. Just some insurance if the temp ever got that high.
