mmmm aston martin, change the front to look like a porsche, add the emblem, lighten the car and slap in a 3.0l turbo 4cyl and price it around 35-45k and I'll take one

cie_lab, nice work! I'm eager to see how your design develops.
This is how I imagined the new 944 to look like. Take a 968, give it 987 headlights, taillights resembling the 928s4 (kinda like what you made), a 928-style hatch, and a vw/audi front mounted engine. Then "inflate" the whole shape by about 10% and you have the new 944. Wait, that would just look like a 928s4. I better leave the designing to you.
But even if Porsche did make a new 944, and priced it super-low at $30k, I would still rather buy a $15k 968, spend about $5k throwing all kinds of new parts and restoration work into it, then $10k rebuilding the motor into a 3.0L 16v variocam turbo.

dammit, I was afraid someone would bring that up...
yeah, this was the car I'm most reminded of by my efforts. not consciously trying to mimic it, it just happens that Aston Martin is one of the few GT-like cars out there that meets my personal design brief, IMHO.
It will never happen (never say never, right?), but it sure would be cool to see a front engine, rear-wheel drive Porsche out there that would be geared to enthusiasts like us. I honestly think there would be a market for a car like this, but then again I am not (nor will ever be) the head of a motor-carriage company.
As for the sloping hood, I don't see any need for a subaru engine (ooops, did I say that out loud????). Look how flat the 944 is already.

Worked on the front end some more. Getting closer (I think).
Here it is rendered with the contour lines making it look more hand drawn.
Again for the modeling purists out there, this is just a draft. It has a long way to go before it would be show-worthy...if ever. If I keep messing with it, I'm going to make a few changes. Not happy with the taillights or the spoiler. I'm also going to add a rear valence/air dam and I think the rear of the wheelwell needs to be flared to cover the tires.
Based on some of the suggestions, I rounded off the rear and added more 'tumblehome' (if you're not sure what that is, it is the curvature of the body, think of the round part on the transverse section of a canoe) and made an attempt to get the front more Porsche-like. As you can see, there's too many little surfaces in the headlight surround, so that needs work.
