It would almost have to be the manifold as porschephile stated. I can't see a ground getting hot enough to actually cause the gas to ignite, unless it was indeed sparking. Ever seen the mythbusters episode where the try to light gas with a cigarette? Yea, you can't, and a cigarette is pretty hot.

That sucks. Can you swap over the interior and suspension to another 944, or did the suspension some how get burned up some?

Not sure if this kinda suggestion is welcome but we had a guy that had a similar if not worse fire the same way. Since the conversion uses non of that stuff in the engine bay, and since you seem to love that car, you need not part it out or junk it. We always think that a fire car is a good conversion candidate because you pull all that stuff out becasue it wont be used. Its jus a matter of cleaning up the firewall and inner wells, and paint. Then, if no replacement porsche engine is available, throw in a V8. If nothing else, you get to keep that car and drive it until you source all the 944 turbo stuff....it is completely reversible.

Hate to see you have to part with it, seeing as you feel for it, just because of current price and availability of porsche stuff.

Heres one of our resident "firecars" ... http://www.porschehybrids.com/gallery/speedracing944

Good luck in any case.

1. - the starter cable shorted - very common.
2. that is NOTHNG didn't even melt all the rubber. I would have it running in 2
hours
3. Reno - how the **** does a ground cause a fire?
4. ALL YOU BONEHEADS WITH THE HORRIBLE OEM FUEL LINES (with 25 recalls on them) MUST CARRY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN YOUR CAR, OR YOU ARE STUPID. THESE THINGS BURN DOWN ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

Easy, when it is not grounded.

If a ground is not grounded, through corrosion, gunk etc, it is carrying a voltage. If the insulation is worn on the ground cable and it then touches any metal on the car, you will have sparks, lots of them. If the corroded ground is near a damaged fuel vapor pipe, like on the 944, guess what....fire! Not saying that is what happened, just that there is cause for concern on 944's just in the area behind the intake manifold.

Try disconnecting your ground terminal on your battery with the ignition on, then try to reconnect it, you will have sparks, That is because the ground wire is carrying voltage.

+1 Starter Cable...

I replaced all cables with HimselHaus cables. Nice stuff, all covered in firebraid, and also spent a few extra hours on the new motor routing and securing away from ANYTHING hazardous.

+1K Fuel Lines!

Also replaced with the HimselHaus fuel lines...originals were ROCK HARD!

PSA: Everyone...If you can't check your own fuel lines, please get them checked somewhere!

I like Jeremy's cables too - nice quality.

Do you know who designs and makes them for him?

How does one get Porsche to replace them through the recalls from the past 20 years?

Get your money from the insurance company then pull the engine and rebuild it. While its out you can repaint the engine bay and redo the hood and header panel.

Get a new wiring harness, fuel lines, intake hosing, yaddi yadda. Replace all of your gaskets and seals.

Clean everything with engine cleaner and you'll be good to go.

Make sure your injectors are sealed, your fuel rail is tightened down, and your fuel lines are all a-ok. I have a large charred black spot on my driveway to remind me of this every time I work on the car.

No doubt it is fix-able. I'd probably replace the hood since that one is probably warped and they can be had used for cheap...
