It's definitely done for. Oil/fuel fires tend to get quite hot, and what with them going for 15 minutes at least, that's a lot of time for the aluminum to deform due to the heat. All it takes is ~700 C for most Al alloys to melt.
Man I'm sorry. Look on the bright side -- my friend's garage burned down a month ago, completely ruining:
'70's Lambo (Miura?...spelling?)
A Lotus of some sort
Formula Ford race car
A perfect 300zx TT, w/ a $15-20k motor next to it, waiting to be installed
Many motorcycles, including a 1940-something Harley
Tens of thousands in tools
1940-something mill, lathe
the list goes on...and all this due to a mistake while MIG welding.
My heart goes out to your beloved 944.

My condolences. Look on the bright side...
well...there is no real bright side (unless you consider that you were not burned alive in the car). Sorry for your loss. I had a fire from a fuel leak once upon a time. I was driving my '88 Rx-7 NA to work and it caught fire in front of a church. Being an athiest, I was not about to pull into the church, but my car was more important than my principles (for 10 minutes at least), so I pulled in. Turned out that, after cleaning up the fire extinguisher mess under the hood, I only burned the fuel rail and part of the wiring harness. It did about $50 damage (junkyard parts guys, not new), so I got off lucky. So again, I'm sorry for your mishap.

After seeing rocks car up in flames, the only "tool" i carry in my car is a fire extinguisher. Sorry to hear about it, man, I would be crushed.

yeah, it was in my garage when it exploded. the fire fighters pushed it into my driveway before dousing it with the hose. good thing it wasn't in gear.
They used three fire extinguishers on it... made a total mess of my garage. but the garage didn't catch on fire, so im happy about that. time for the much awaited pics.
still think it's salvageable?

Sorry to hear that, but a word of warning to all. I just cleaned the earth back there, just at the point where Kurt's fire started. The earths were covered in a chemical grime caused I think from a previous leak from the heater bypas valve that sits above them. Also the fuel vapor pipe was cracked in the same area and one of the earth wires had the insulation stripped, It's all somewhat packed in that area of the engine bay.
Our cars are getting old, so I would suggest that everyone has a look at that particular area, clean the earths, replace the rubber tubing on both sides of the heater valve, heatshrink any broken insulation and replace the fuel vapor pipe. Fuel, electricity and water do not mix well, and this area has all three in a cramped space. Cost less than $100 and about two hours of your time.

Burning Brakes
I saw a turbo car burned worse than that. I think youve got a decent shot at salavging at least the lower end, and possibly the head and manifold. The turbo is probably fine, as it most of the piping im guessing. Remember heat rises, so anything below the flame didnt get nearly as hot as those things at or above its level.
Im sorry to hear about your car! What is it with 944's and engine fires?
