Default How much oil does a turbo burn?

Hi there,

Recently got hold of a 944 turbo ('86) and noticed that the oil seems to be going down rather quickly... or not.

It seems to go from between the max and min marks on the dipstick to min (or less) within a period of 1400 KM or a couple of months. Does that sound about normal or should I be worried?

Many thanks,
Alex

That sounds normal. It says somewhere in the manual that it burns a quart every 1500mi or something? Driving harder burns more. I went through a 1/2 quart on the last rennlist drive we did, and that was about 500mi.

FYI, between the max and min fill lines on the dipstick is 1 quart.

Hmm, my car uses about a quart every 2000-2500 miles, and that is probably all due to a small oil leak (rear main or oil pan gasket.) We did a 'spirited' drive through the mtns the other day (prob ~250 'pretty rough' miles for me total). Oelstand didn't show a change on the dipstick at all !!)

I'd say your car has issues !!

I have to agree with Ted on this. Mine drops just a smidge every 3000 miles. That is just enough to see it. I would say a quart every 1400km is excessive. I know the manual says a quart every 1500miles is ok, but 1400km is 870 miles

well mine just leaks. From the balance shaft and cam tower. Sadly, the gaskets/seals were replaced 2-3 years or 4,000 miles ago.

remove rubber boot between intercooler pipe and throttle body.
check for oil there. If so, your turbo is "spitting" oil

Rule of thumb: if oil drips out of the intercooler when rotated with the outlet facing down, the turbo needs some serious attention.
Bad thing of this method is that it does not test that easy with the car still attached to the cooler......

I don't know Hans, mine always has a bit of oil in my cooler pipes, however I rarely see any noticeable drop in level.

FWIW, the owner's manual allows for more oil consumption in the 944 Turbo than in the 944 NA.

Although his car sounds like it's using a bit more than most, it's probably still within an acceptable range.

The rule of thumb m dad always told me with my volvo turbo(s) was if its a quart or less per 1k miles don't worry about it.

That said, when new it shouldn't burn much at all.

I thought they called diesels oil burners because diesel fuel looks like oil. Please correct me if i'm wrong

UM, you're wrong. Diesel fuel looks like fuel, just a diff color IIRC.

Is the oil dripping out of the intercooler??
The pipes in mine are wet as well, oil consumption is less than 1 liter (about one quart) in 2000 km (around 1250 mls)
And in my case the oil is "consumed" by the turbo.
