Default Replacing shifter/torque tube foam thingy ...

So I was all set to replace the foam insulation sound-muffling thing that goes above he torque tube below the shifter (87 944 automatic), but a guy I was talking to said he thought I'd have to take the whole damn torque tube out in order to place it.

Is that true? I assume I have to disconnect the shifter and associated cables, but the torque tube? Just to replace some damn foam?

Advise, preeze!

only way i know of w/o tearing the hell out of the foam- drop the rear suspension and trans down- or pull the trans and drop the tt out.

Well, first of all thanks for the info on the vacuum line. I have gotten much too aquainted with the underside of the 944 for my liking. I don't think its a good idea to remove the foam. If you do that you will be looking directly to the top of the torque tube and as the exhaust is right underneath that you might find the shifter getting a tad warm.

Just to clarify: the old foam is pretty much gone. The shifter gets damn hot and engine fumes enter the cabin. This is me needing to replace foam that I suspect is nonexistent.

Is there an alternative? Some spray-foam stuff maybe?

NOOOO don't use spray foam - bad things will happen like burning from the high temp catalyst below.

as i recall, i was able to get the foam in through the shifter hole without removing the TT, but removing the shifter. you may have to cut the foam in two pieces to get it in correctly. squeeze the foam into the hole, work it into place and maybe some RTV to hold it.

I made one...lol.

Using some foam similar to what you'd stuff a car chair with but with higher temperature resistance; glued some blocks together and cut out the shape of the TT on a bandsaw.

Keeps the heat and noise down.
