Default Quick brake rotor comparo lesson

New parts came in the mail and laughed when i compared the sizes of the 928GTS 'Big Blacks', stock 951 and stock 944 rotors. I knew the big blacks were bigger, but i didnt think it would be THAT much bigger...

The 928GTS rotor is 12.68'' diameter and 1.26'' thick.
Stock 951 rotor is 11.73'' and 1.10'' thick.
I didnt even bother to measure the stock n/a rotor..

From left to right, FrozenRotors slotted cryo treated 928GTS rotor, ATE slotted 951 rotor and stock n/a rotor

You probably have enough braking power to stop your car and every other car behind you.

What does it take to install such a kit on an NA car? I expect 951 components for the suspension.

Why go to the big brakes when the Willwood kit offers 4 piston brakes that fit the NA cars with 15" wheels? Do you need larger disks?

Congrats! Welcome to the big leagues!

I'm amazed that on my turbo S (which is 19 years old) I still occasionally get comments from people like, "Boy, those are big brakes!"

Atleast 16'' wheels and the proper offset turbo spindles are required. From there you will need adapters to fit the radial mount calipers and the proper pads, rotors. You can get the M030 type spindles so you can avoid the use of adapters, but they are expensive and hard to come by.

The Willwood kit allows you to keep 15'' wheels, but retains the stock rotor and does nothing to upgrade the rear brakes. In my opinion having a larger disc is just as important as a bigger caliper (if not more important) to help with heat capacity. Comparing the heat capacity of a n/a rotor and a 928GTS rotor is practically a joke, it dosent even come close.

Tifo, i just wanted to thank you again for educating me on the turbo brake conversion. Ive since done it on 3 different cars and always think 'gotta thank Jeremy again for giving me such tips as using the 1/2 inch spacer washers for the rear'.

My n/a is over braked already with the stock 951 brakes and considering its been lightened a bit. The 4-pistons stop a stock 951 pretty darn well with 2900lbs and 217hp. The 951 brakes are working to stop my sub 2800lb n/a with 147hp (if that)! and its downright impressive how my eye ***** are ripped out of my eye sockets when i have r-compounds on the front. I had to relearn braking when using the r-compound 951 brake combo.

The 951 will eventually be getting the 928GTS treatment. Its a shame it dosent have ABS though... i have a feeling i will be needing it .

I'm a proponent of big brakes, my A4 has an S4 big kit. If it were more than a bolt-on affair, I'd passed.

It does seem like plenty of work to get the big disks in there but if heat dissipation is concern, you have the answer. It'll be interesting to see if you feel any loss of acceleration turning those manhole covers.

The 951 will be getting them so it wont be as much of an issue as it would be with a n/a. Paired with the 968 brake cooling scoops i dont think i will ever over drive the brakes on my 944.

If you just wanted to put the stock 951 brakes on your n/a, its not hard to do at all. Its just a matter of finding the parts (Which are fairly easy to come by). You can do the entire package for under $600 if you shop around. I did mine for less than $400...i was real lucky. You only need the spindles, calipers, rotors and pads. Hubs are the same as what you have now. Only running 16'' wheels might be a downside to some, but personally tire selection is so limited in 15'' (with the exception of some r-compounds) sizes it didnt really phase me.

A funny thing to note is the 928GTS rotors barely squeeze under a 15'' phone dial .

I did a similar comparison when I upgraded my front brakes for my Infiniti Q45.

Top one is the stock Q45, middle is the 993 turbo which is the same size as the 928GTS, and the bottom is the Brembo Gran Turismo.

just amazing! as a 951 noob, I'm amazed at how great the stock brakes are. Your brakes seem like they'd cause a rift in the time-space continuum.

Size is one thing, weight is another. What's the weight difference between the three including the calipers?
