Default Custom hatch (glass fitment question)

My hatch tint is coming off and the top of the glass looks like it will go soon. I called around and nobody is willing to reseal the hatch and do the tint without guaranteeing that they will not break the glass.

I have been researching for a while now and I think a custom hatch is possible as a DIY. I was thinking of using a 89-91 CRX glass in place of where the flat portion of the existing hatch and the surrounding hatch will be a sheet metal frame.

The only information I am having trouble finding is how the fastback glass attaches to the hatch frame. Does anyone know or have schematics?

Fastback? Are you refering to a mustang?

For the 944 is is attached with adhesive. Any winshield installer can do this. You might want to check some of the big name places.

Your tint film is going to be aftermarket which most sunroof installers do, but verify the amount of tint you can have per your local laws.

The only people that will agree to tint your 944 hatch are people that haven't done one before. Call around!

It's the "ops, your hatch glass cracked" that I dread.

Why wouldn't you try it first, and if they break the glass, then go through this craziness you speak of.

I'm having a hard time understanding how having your hatch glass tinted would even come close to a point where someone could break the glass. What exactly are they going to do, remove it, put it in an oven, put the tint on and melt it to the glass?

Of course if it does break it's easy to find someone who has one from a parts car. They are cheap, but expensive as hell to ship. I'll sell you the one from the 89 i'm parting for $50..... + shipping.

I need the hatch resealed and tinted. Every place I called in San Francisco and its surrounding counties would not touch this job with a 10 foot pole. They all recommended that I get a new glass and then do the tinting. If I had a dedicated garage where I can leave the hatch off for 24+ hours , then yes, I would reseal it myself.

I gave lots of thought to a Lexan hatch, but I need a rear defroster in the fall and winter.

In the meantime, it is sealed with silicone which seems to hold for now.

When you find a good place let me know. I've been wanting to tint my whole car for some time now due to this summer heat and no a/c. If I don't end up doing it myself, it would be nice to have a good reference for a shop.

Is this on a 944? You should get a 968 hatch and tint that!

Came across this while doing more research.

http://www.exatec.de/

GE lexan with a special coating for defroster and integrated tint. If they made a hatch replacement with these specs, I would be the first in line.
