Default I think its time for a Head gasket, Indy HG GTG anyone?

Instead of taking it in to the dealership I was thinking about having some
people over my house on a Sunday to help me out. My motivation to this is 1)
I will learn alot, 2) Cost, 3) I can change some other stuff while the
intake/head is off 4) a mini 944 car show in my drive way Obviously
there will be lots of beer, pizza and anything else anyone
wants. Anyone interested? Im located in IN.
Thanks

Antonio, I would suggest you have the head checked for flatness while it is off the car. I would be happy to lend a hand if I can get the time.

Ben im planning on taking the head to a local machine shop(same guy that
resurfaced my flywheel). That’s if I can get some people over to help me out.
The most I have done on the car myself is minor stuff, doing the HG job is way
out of my league. Heck if someone volunteers to come over, they are going to
have to bring some tools. I have some screw drivers and hammers, that’s it

Sam, the car runs great and everything but I have noticed a small drop in the
coolant level over the last 8 months. And sometimes when the car sits for a
couple days, it sputters and almost dies at startup. Goes to perfect idle once I
tap the gas pedal. Only does this about 5 out of 10 times on startup.
And the temp needle goes to the last white mark when at a traffic stop, never
goes in the red though. And the last thing, there are a few small oil drops in
the coolant tank. No milkshake or anything like that.
It never smokes or anything like that, the car runs perfect other then the
occasional rough idle at startup. Im thinking its better to be safe then sorry,
especially with me wanting to start modifying the car.

I can't imagine that I'd be any help, but I'd love to meet up with everyone again- it's been a while!

Sounds like you have a plan going. Are you thinking about doing this before the Taj trip?

Hey David, haven't seen you post in awhile, been driving the N/A lately?

I don’t know yet, I think this will be done after the Taj trip unless
someone wants to come over and help me really quick
If it’s after the Taj trip, im hoping to have it done before
Porsches 2 Oxford. I don’t even really know if it’s a HG issue, but the
symptoms I have sure looks like it. Then again I heard that the rough
start issue could be one of the vac valves(?) under the intake, the oil
pebbles in the tank could be the cooler seals, the slight drop in the coolant
could be evaporation after 9 months etc. I really dont know but I don’t
want the thing to go bad and have to rebuild or anything like that.
So im thinking I should take the safe route.

I'm in Greenwood (Southside Indy) and I'd be more than willing to help out. I did a HG on my 924S over christmas, it's not bad. Just make sure to have the head leveled. I got it done for $30 I think at Quinlin Automotive. Had it done in like 2 days and it looked/worked great.

Hate to admit it, but I don't even have the registration current on it at the moment! I got the 528i when it was really cold and the NA was balking at the temperature, so I've been driving the BMW since then. And then of course we bought a house, so into the garage went the Porsche. I've driven it once in the past two months, and realized as I got halfway through the trip that the reg had expired a month earlier!

However, I'm getting the registration handled this week, and will be getting some paintwork done next week, as well as taking some time to get things running properly. My plan is to have everything working properly in time for the Taj trip- I can't imagine making that run in the BMW- it just wouldn't be right!

Sounds like fun why are all the GTG's so far from me? Good Luck with it! Its a fairly straight forward proceedure as I did mine this spring.

David, glad to hear you got the house. Hope it was the one you wanted with all the extra garage space. You definitely need to have your 944 for the Taj!

Yep- 4 car garage, and there's even some space in it again, now that we've gotten most of our stuff moved into the house. (it's really depressing having a 4 car garage, but only being able to fit two cars in it. The BMW got to live in the driveway for something like two weeks before we cleared out the space to move it inside.)
