944 Stereo (head unit) Recomendations??
My 5 year old Alpine unit took a dump(radio still works). I was wondering what all you guys and gals have and would be willing to offer up some info. I want to stay around $200.00. Nothing glitzy, no funky lights, just something nice.
And yes I turn it down time from time and listen to the Porsche music.....

I'm partial to Blaupunkts for our cars, they just look right in a German car to me. For $200 you should be able to get something that will let you connect your iPod/MP3 player.
Midwest Electronics has lots of info on the various Blau receivers...and eBay has the best prices

Take a look at onlinecarstereo.com - they have a solid selection. I like last year's Blaupunkts (like the MP46) and some of the lower end Clarions look decent.
Check around on the price though - I actually just ordered a Nakamichi cd400 that's going into the 968 for $289 from an amazon.com affiliate.
I'll let you know what I think in a week or two once I get it installed.

I just bought a Blaupunkt Bermuda MP36 from ME in the link above.
Throw in an ipod aux cable, ($20.00) and you've got a direct connection to your ipod and it charges the ipod too!
The total for the two is less than $130 IIRC.

I have a 52x4 Sony Xplod CD player...it has an AUX input for your MP3/iPod. It sounds great, doesn't skip CDs or anything. It has 2 plugs in the back if you have an amp/CD changer/woofer, too. I've seen them around for about $120...I got mine for $80 new.

I have a fairly new Alpine CDA-9857 that I'm going to be taking out to put in a Nakamichi also. The NAK's don't have all the bells and whistles that the Alpine has, but look about as close to stock as you can get for aftermarket. I'm getting a CD-500, but you can get a new CD-300 for less than $200 on ebay.

I have one of those Sony Xplod units too. They're black, relatively discrete, and don't look too out of place. Nice red glow from the buttons too, but nothing obtrusive. Probably looks best in an all black interior.

After looking around a bit im settling on a Pioneer DEH-2900MP, I have an older Pioneer deck in my truck and have never had any problems with it. The 2900 also has an auxiliary input for ipods, etc and can accept the Pioneer GEX-P920XM XM receiver as well.

I've got an early 90s blaupunkt in mine. Not very fancy, but it has inputs, looks stock, and puts out a decent amount of power for a HU, and they go for like $30 on ebay. I've actually got two, a tape deck that I can hook up a remote 10 cd deck to or a cd deck.
Jackson CM148 (not the exact one pictured, but it looks the same) and a Miami Beach CD148

just installed a Becker CDR-220 that came out of a 99 C-2. It looks stock and even says Porsche on the face and on the screen when it turns on. It can be gotten from www.swstereo.com for about $250. Make sure you tell them that it is going in a 944 because it requires a different type of face plate because the original is a directional and difficult to view in our car. They also have the IPOD interface and any other connector you may need. There are a lot of posts on the Becker 220 if you need more info.

Nakamichi TD-700. I bought one off someone here 3 years ago and it's still one of the best upgrades I've gotten for the car. Through an external equalizer with a line in you can add an input for an ipod or satalite (or whatever) without using a tape adapter or anything. It's great quality and fits the look of the car perfectly.
