Default Tapping noise S2 3.0 litre

In the last few days, I noticed a tapping noise in the 3.0 liter 16 valve engine. It definitely increases and decreases with rpm and under heave acceleration sounds like a cricket chirping. I took off the cam cover to see if there was anything happening with the timing chain, but all looks well under there.

I also tried to locate the noise by feeling around a bit and it is most pronounced on the fuel rail near the front of the engine and you can even feel it in the fuel line that comes off of the front of the fuel rail. Any ideas? Thanks, folks.

hard to say, but it *could* be a rod bearing

I had a faint sound similar to described, and then sent fuel injectors to WitchHunter for overhaul, and when they came back the sound was WAY louder. I put a stethescope probe to the motor and its deffinatedly the pintles in the injectors closing. No goop to dampen them. My initial thought was a lifter going bad, but those were checked out OK when doing the cam chain tensioner.

Get in there with a stethescope and see where the noise is coming from.

In another thread regarding a similar noise, someone mentioned a blown rod bearing wuld be indicated by lower oil pressure and silvery particles on the magnetic oil plug. My oil pressure is normal, but I did notice some silvery residue on the oil plug when I changed the oil a few weeks ago.

Can you tell maybe it's coming form the lifters? I too had this problem a while back. Just took me some time, money and inspecting them and cleaning.. nasty tapping noise was gone after. It was a sticky lifter.

what kind of oil you running? Could be warm enough you need something alittle heavier to keep the lifters up if its thinning out. Def keep an eye on the coolant.

Don't know if this will help you (or is related for that matter) but there's a TSB on the OPRVs (I too own an '89 s2). Story goes . . . I started the car and heard a loud tapping. Shut down and called a flatbed. When I got it back from the dealer one lifter had been replaced along with the OPRV. Thankfully it was all done under warranty. This was a LOUD tapping, not the clicking you get from the injectors.

Good luck. -clark

The patient is officially on life support... House call from the good Doc Boost tonight. We drained the oil and found lotsa shiny flecks in it as well as the infamous Christmas Tree effect on the drain plug magnet. Looks like a spun bearing, folks after only 24k miles and 1,000 posts. Time for a summer project...
