Default Turbo calipers on 87 944S

Just another quick question for a potential buyer from pelican. Will the 86 944 turbo front and rear calipers bolt onto a 87 944 S (16v) with no modification?

thanks,
keith

No. Need 87+ 944T/S2/968 front spindles. Rears need a spacer/washer. And front and rear rotors, of course.

Because the '87 S needs late offset spindles.

The 944S came stock with 15" wheels and NA brakes. I'd treat it as an NA.

alright.. so if I give him my calipers/rotors/spindles/hubs.. he cannot bolt them onto his car? It sounds like ti should work.. its almost everything thats on the front of the 86 turbo except the control arms/struts/ect

Only the calipers will work. The spindles are different between early and late offset cars. The rotors are also different..and the hubs are unique to the rotors (early and late offset mount differently).

Wonder if you could adjust newer calipers to an older rotor..?

alright im confused as hell.. someone please just break down what this guy can use out off the stuff I have from my 1986 944 Turbo. He has a 1987 944S.. he originally just wanted the calipers.

1.) He can bolt the calipers to his 944S stuff.. just sell him calipers
2.) He needs the 86 turbo hubs/spindles/rotors + calipers
3.) Neither of the Above.. He needs__________....

thanks,
keith

The only parts he can use from your '86 Turbo are the calipers. Thats it.

If he wants to use those calipers on his car, he still needs '87+ spindles and rotors. His hubs can be reused.

Actually, the calipers are different from a 86 to an 87 turbo. I cannot remember what the difference is. When I installed Turbo calipers on my 944S I remember buying a set of front 86 calipers from a friend only to find out they would not work.

Assuming you have the correct calipers, you need the following from a 1987 (or 88) 951:
Spindles
Hubs
rotors
pads
Misc hardware

I am pretty sure the calipers between the '86-88 951 and the non M030 968 are the same thing and interchangeable. Someone may want to back up or debunk that. The only differences between the caliper might be piston size and the type of seal used (either the scraper ring or the boot). I am fairly certain the boot type only came on the 964 calipers however (basically the same exact caliper sans seal type).

I was also confused on this for a while, but the stock n/a hubs fit the turbo spindles and rotors fine. I swapped between the 968 abs ring equipped hubs and my regular n/a hubs and have no problems.

IIRC the pistons are different - or something else makes the 87's "better".

I'm trying to go from memory a project I did 8 years ago. What I do know is I have a set of 86 Turbo calipers in a box because for whatever reason they were not ideal for my 87.

Might have something to do with ABS? I don't know.

'86 calipers had slightly different piston sizes for more even pad wear but other wise are identical. All non-s turbo calipers can be swapped interchangeably. They use the same pad size, same mounting points, same dimensions.

If you give him your spindles, hubs, calipers and rotors, they should bolt up fine unless he has ABS. ABS will require later offset spindles and hubs that have the teeth for the ABS sensor.

If he uses your '86 spindles and hubs, he'll have to always use '86 rotors since '86 rotors fit behind '86 hubs vs the way later years work. 87+ the rotors fit over the appropriate hub.

You can use '87+ spindles and hubs on an '86 and vice versa. The issues that come up are around whether you can get enough camber or have too much. Mounting '87 spindles and hubs to an '86 will sometimes require camber plates to get more than 1 degree of camber. Going the other way, things should be fine.
