Unhappy wheel lock won't budge

Anyone ever had a wheel lock get stuck on the wheel stud. The tool I had to remove it broke. I can't chisel it loose either. This is the wheel lock that has the 4 or five prongs that fit inside the holes, and then you're supposed to be able to loosen it. At this point I am trying to figure out a way to just get the thing off. Help appreciated!

This same thing happened to me with a Macguard wheel lock on my family car. The tire shop hammered on a tight fitting socket over the wheel lock then racheted it off... mechanic said it happens all the time and this was a standard procedure of defeating a wheel lock. Sorry not sure which size socket he used, just find one that will barely fit. hope this helps.

wheel lock is recessed into the cookie cutter...no edge to get a socket around this thing...

Take a 12 point deepwell socket of the correct size, and beat it on with a hammer, then turn it off with a large breaker bar. The wheel locking lug will be shot of course, but since your tool is as well, you will need a new set anyway.

I have to remove these locks all the time, as people always lose the socket key on the newer cars.

this lock has 2 parts, the outer lug portion is off. the inner "lock" portion is recessed into the bevel . there is no outer edge exposed to get a grip on.

i was about to mention they make a special "soft" socket that you beat on and just rachet off. But if there is no room, i don't know what to tell you.

ps why do people still use wheel locks, they're are stupid easy to get off (in most cases).

wheel lock gone bad! If I had some type of socket that had "teeth" on the end I might be able to dig into it enough to get it to turn. There is not much room between the threaded wheel stud and the edge. Don't want to add to the problem.

Can you grind a notch into the top of it to screwdriver it off?

it's an aluminum part. this just digs into the piece more and more (spreading it closer to the outside edge and the wheel stud) may have to drill into it at several points and eventually break it. If I do this though, I risk ruining the threads on the wheel stud.

Once your done with getting it off, take all of them and throw them away. Tell all of your friends to do the same. Can't tell you the number of wheels I've seen with chisel and drill marks because of those evil little locks.

Good luck.

i bought a 76 z-car with locking lugs on it and just took it to a mechanic and he got them off somehow. i dont even know how he did it. if the car is driveable i would just take it to a good mechanic and have him take them off. wheel locks are just a big hassle. like somebody is ever gonna try to steal your wheels

Thanks for the simplest solution. No matter how hard I pulled on the key, the lock would not budge. I used my heat gun and the aluminum sleeve slipped right off undamaged.
