Default 944 Fest Dates

I know there was great debate on the subject, and I hardly expect there to be final plans in place at this point....but have we defined a date yet? I don't really care what we do...but I do need to know what days to get off work for.

Any news?

Yep, that is a date I have reserved with Nelsons. I have talked to a lot of folks, and we are still throwing around ideas. I'm really sorry I don't have something more concrete for ya'll. I am discovering why there are not many events like this one around. Between financial issues and our litigious society there are some serious hurdles to jump. Travis has me researching a corporation to limit liability, but a lawyer has advised me it is not a 100% shield. An insurance agent ball-park quoted me on an umbrella liability policy for the event. It STARTS around 10 grand, and that is if we have someone with a license dispensing alcohol, or eliminate it. On paper maybe I can break even. But do I have sizable funds to invest until returns come in? Maybe. Will 40 people shell out $200? maybe. Some folks think handing it over or joining up with the PCA is a solution. Sure, they probably have a handle on where to get liability insurance they can afford, but I've been seriously warned by several folks deep in the PCA that mixing with the 944Fest would destroy all that the Fest is. I do see that some of my early events would have had a hard time getting committee approval.

I'm sorry to those who have offered ideas that I haven't exactly embraced, I know you want to help, and I need it. I'm just that I'm in such a difficult place right now...
It is a decision I don't see an easy answer to.

I would ditch the idea of any alcohol. I'm sure we can still enjoy a great time and yet remain sober. Cars and drink don't mix so just save all of the legal headaches that are associated with the problem. I am hopeful that the planning works out as a new owner who would love the chance to meet a bunch of other 944 owners and enjoy our cars.

Hi Dan,

A couple friends of mine were running into similar problems with organizing a VW track day. The insurance was super expensive, or sometimes not available at all. The solution they came up with was to team up with NASA. They paid a fee to the NASA organizers, but then the event was sanctioned by NASA, which gave them access to inexpensive insurance for the event. I know that they hit the break even point, but this was at VIR which is an expensive track, and they had around 100 participants in the track day. They had to give up on limiting to VWs to fill the event, but VW drivers tend to like to look at their cars more than drive them. Even with NASA running the event the participants did not have to join NASA so there was no extra expense for students. If youd like any of the contact info for the NASA people that they used send me a PM. I dont know if they woudl do the same for your event since they are based out of Richmond, VA, but perhaps they could point you towards someone that could.

The hatch in our cars is big enough for a few 12-packs...of pepsi

Alcohol shouldn't be neccessary if we'd be meeting up to show off our cars and get to know eachother.

As long as people are bringing their own and no one person is dispensing, I dont see a problem, but I'm not up on the legal mumbo jumbo.

Mike, my legal advise said that IF you don't take steps to block alcohol, in the eyes of the law it is the same as if you supplied it. Nice, huh? I definately would consider the BYOB route if it helped!

Thanks for the support, Chris.

How about not drinking "on-site" then? Would that help in addition to BYOB?

But if it comes down to no alcohol and 944fest happens VS. no 944fest, i think we all know which one is the route to go...

(Dan, call/PM me if i can help out in ANY way!)

Wheerrrrreeeeeeeee

V2rocket wants to come...

If you guys do decide to bring some booze, those compartments under the carpet in the hatch area could hold a nice amount of ice....coolers anyone?
