Default NOW WHAT? (radio help needed) UPDATE: It'S IN!!!

I would like to take my old Clarion head unit out and install my new one. This may seem stupid, but i can't seem to get the old one out of it's "home", and i don't have any manuals to help me.

I've already taken the faceplate and bezel off, but where do i go from here? i've tried to "gently" pull on the tabs to the right and left of the unit, but it seems that they are part of the securing device, and will therefore not budge.

I've taken the cubby out to take a pic of the underside of the unit if this helps...


Anyone know how to get this out? (it seems easy enough )

Hard to tell from the pictures but you will probably need one of the two different types of DIN tools to get the radio out...

You can pick these up locally from any stereo place or BestBuy, Circuit City or your local auto place.

I don't think so, because the old one is a Clarion (aftermarket) and the one that i want to install is a Clarion (aftermarket). The head unit that is in there isn't the OEM.

Take a in focus picture of the radio with no face on. The radio is supposed to slide into the metal part with the tabs, that metal part usually is difficult to take out with the radio still in place. The metal thing is called a DIN slot.

It dosent matter if its OEM or not, 99% of radios use some type of unique tool to remove. And when i mean unique tool, i mean one of the two i posted above. Trust me... ive removed and installed enough radios on cars to know this .

Oh, okay. This is my first, so i had no idea. I'll head over to Buest Buy on my way to work and see if they carry one of those.

most times the frame that encloses the headunit is held into place by tension spring tabs on the side of the headunit. Some manufactures provide a slim tool that depress these tabs to allow the head unit to slide out. See if you can locate on the sides of the headunit if there any slots. If so try and find something that you could use to push the tabs down and slide it out.

I found out that i need a special Clarion tool. Does anyone have a set of these that they would be willing to sell me/let me borrow?

dude all you need is a slim piece of metal to slide into each side- dont let them con you into buying the stupid little tools. When you push the strip in between the radio and the cage it pops the little spring tab out, grab the back of the radio and pull outwards, slide the metal in on each side and itll come out.

Like the others said all you need are two slim pieces of metal to force the spring clips out.

Try two standard butter knives...once you get it out, you'll see all of the little metal fingers that were fighting with you...

Well i tried the butter-knife technique for about an hour...To no avail.

More pics: hopefully someone can help decipher my problem. I'd like to get this POS out of my car!!! (and i can't just drive it to Best Buy and have them do it since there is a foot of snow/salt on the roads and the car is in storage)

Is my next step demolishing the perfectly good radio?

try again! Two butter knifes between the metal cage and the plastic face- wiggle them up and down and pull out on the radio at the same time- you'll get it.

i'll keep trying, but i have done clutch's that went easier than this $%^& thing!
