I'm not bagging on Vertex, only Fleenor but we did a TB/BS belt job on Serges car awhile back. We couldn't believe it but the tooth spacing was so far off it wouldn't even seat on the cam gear after 10 teeth. Total POS and the spare Conti I had slipped right on. I wouldn't use a Fleenor again for any car I own. Check out these pics and read up on the comments.

Look on the Flennor belt, the one time I tried one, it had made in the USA on it.

Called IAN at 944 online and told him about my delima since I bought the kit from VErtex and that I needed to do the job this weekend. Well guess what, he offered to send me a conti for free and send it 2 day express. Wow, where can you get customer support like that. Next time I need stuff, I will be going to 944online.

I used conti on my 924 with no problem. On my 944 I just used Gates because it's the porsche oe, paragon sells it for 40 bucks I think. I'm not sure if it is better than the conti but the rubber does feel thicker and more rubbery vs the conti.

I have a conti in my garage with several stripped teeth. I was very lucky to do an inspection that caught the problem before a second disaster. I have used Porsche only since. With the conti and Porsche belts next to each other you can easily see that the Porsche is built better. I still buy them with Porsche lettering on the box. From my experience it is easy for me to pay the premium.

I think Conti is the OEM for the timing belts

Ian is a great guy. I bought my euro rear bumper from him. He sent me a 944online hat! He is a great guy to work with and I will be buying his waterpump kit here soon. Comes with everything you need for the front of the engine!

My understanding is that Gates is the OEM for Porsche.

From my experience with a belt that came from a Conti box I will not use that brand again. The two belts I have used from Porsche boxes have performed flawlessly and that is what I will purchase in the future.

To each their own!

I'll jump in here as well because I have had a T-belt failure before (do search) with all scheduled maintence done up to that point and even using the P9201. It was a Conti that failed on me and after that I have run the Gates PowerGrip Made in UK that is OEM Porsche. Side by side the Gates has better rubber coverage (the Conti you could see the cords underneath) and definitely has a more supple and flexible feel. The Conti almost feels plastic like in comparison. For the Balance Shaft belt I continue to run the Conti mainly because the Gates is just north of $150 last time I checked.

To my eye it seems the teeth on the Conti are not part of the webbing of the actual belt, whereas on the Porsche belt the teeth appear to be part of the webbing. I think a visual inspection side by side is very convincing.

Thanks for the back up Charlie

Jon, I think I have some used Conti belts still around I will take another look at the teeth and how they are incorporated into the belt matrix itself but I think you are right from when I inspected my Conti that broke. The undeneath of the Conti's look like an exposed rib cage of a starving person, and to be honest I rather have something more healthy looking and strongerstanding in between running good and a bunch of bent valves. Especially since the Gates is just a few $$ more.
