Default question about 944S brakes

Ive read up on 944S' and from the literature Ive sifted through it says alot about upgraded brakes, I have a 944S and a NA 944, but the brakes are the same size on both, is this right? Or was there an option that my car missed out on?

Thanx ahead of time

Dean

ABS (with 951/S2 calipers) was a rare option on S cars. Most of them came with the same single piston n/a brakes.

There was an even more rare clubsport option that included all the M030 goodies as well.

you'd be much better off getting a pair of Wilwoods with some better pads. Upgrading to a 951/S2 brake configuration takes alot more than just the rotors and calipers, and even moreso when integrating ABS.

Rennbay sells the 4 piston Wilwoods for a great price, and they bolt right up

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I am fairly certain you could not order an S with 951 calipers. All of them came with the single piston N/A brakes with a brake bias proportioning valve.

Tifo may be right, I just remember seeing an S on ebay a while back with 951 calipers on it, advertised as a factory option.

replace the pads, and enjoy the eye-popping power of the wilwoods in the front!

but seriously, there's no need to mess with the rears on a stock n/a or S. they stop the car adequately even in race conditions (assuming you've got the right pads and rotors)

once you get out of the power and speed range of an n/a or S, then start looking for bigger rear calipers

okk thanks, just one more question though, are there a cheaper set of non-name brand calipers that I could look into, but that would still up my braking performance. And how hard would it be to swap in porsche script rotors?

Unfortunately the aftermarket for these cars is small, even smaller for n/a cars. Tifo might chime in here with the comprehensive list of parts needed to use the 951 rotors with the Porsche script you're talking about. It's a pretty long (and expensive) list.

Youd be amazed by what a fresh set of high-friction pads can do for braking performance.

^^These would be great for a racing application. Paragon's also got a good selection of street-friendly pads as well.

The only 944S that came with 951 brakes was the M637 Club Sports, and there are only 4 of them in the US, 2 '87s, and 2 '88s.

So all regular 944S's came with N/A brakes. ABS was an option for these cars in '87 and '88, but its pretty rare.

Why do you want to upgrade the brakes? For track use, for street use, for the look? If its for track use, try some better brake cooling and a competition pad, before upgrading the car. For street use, I would not bother. If its for the look, you will want the front and rear brakes to say "porsche", so go with the 951 brakes. "wilwood" wont even impress the girlfriend's little brother.

If you do need more brakes for track use, use the 951 setup. Front and rear calipers, rotors, and you will need front 87+ 951/S2/968 non-M030 spindles, which are not that expensive on the used parts market.

Anyway you go, if you dont have ABS, forget about it. Its a major conversion for a car that did not come with the factory option.
