Red face Can I NA My Turbo? - Project Thread

Little play on the can I "turbo my NA" threads, figured I'd cross post this over here. I've been tearing down my 951 after massive transaxle failure last season and decided that I didnt have the time/money to put it back together the way I wanted (with a new engine and a built transaxle) before the start of this season (March). So in the mean time I decided to pickup a 944 NA parts car from plyhammer and swap the NA engine and transaxle into my 951. Bit of an interesting project but should be fun enough to keep me occupied for one season. Chris White and I are going to squeeze the NA engine out on a dyno with my Tec3R and see what it can do. The only mods will be exhaust (header back), Tec3R, Spec Flywheel and Individual throttle bodies. It's originally an 85.5 engine so lower comp pistons, but oh well, I didnt feel like spending any money on this project. Anyway, enough chit chat, here are some photos for you guys (bit of a summary from the thread in the turbo forum).

Transaxle remains.

The NA donor:

NA drivetrain pulled.

Going to be reusing that, I'll leave the spec for the turbo engine.

In rusty/usual torque tube condition.

Starting to look better

Much better

NA on the stand

Stripped and ready to be pressure washed in the AM.

I figure since I'm an "NA guy" now I'll keep this thread updated on the project too. Hope you enjoy the photos/progress

I wonder what extra you will be able to squeeze out of that motor with your plans.

Did you rebuild the torque tube or just clean it up?

Just cleaned that one, the other one I have I'm rebuilding. I really think I'm going to polish my other one. Might as well have a clean underbody too (stripping all the undercoating and painting the underbody along with new hardware).

Let me know how the rebuilding goes. My clutch is going to need to get done sooner or later (90k miles and original) and my rear most bearing is shot. I have a spare tube at my friends place i got to rebuild. I have a source for the bearings and can get the delrin sleeves done at the local machine shop..im not just to sure i know what i am doing with the rest of the procedure..especially riveting the bearing carriers back together.

BTW i havent had a chance to mail out the $$ yet, i am going to do it first thing tomorrow.

I think it is an awesome project. Especially hooking the TEC3 up to an N/A motor. I'd like to see what it's capable of with that kind of engine management.

I have to confess I actually thought about doing that so that I could drive my car around while my turbo engine was redone. You know I have never driven an n/a 944.

Cool. Now you'll be ablt to keep up with the Ferrari's and Lambo's on the AKA RALLY.

Well, considering that you have a sweet NA conversion and all...

eh rebuilding the tube is easy its just time consuming I did mine last winter and its holding up great and very smooth.

Any idea what number the n/a motor will push with all said on it mike?

What did you put down? It seems like average for an NA motor is about 129whp 135ft/lbs correct?

I honestly have no idea, depends on how healthy it is, I'm not rebuilding it, so whatever the leakdown numbers happen to be is what they'll stay at. Just doing gaskets/seals, the usual stuff. If I had to take a guess, I'll say 135whp 140ft/lbs of torque, but that's a completely random out of the hat guess.

After tearing down 3 944's, a e34, an Austin Healey and an e30 in under 3 weeks your garage would look like crap too!

The torque tube consists of the chromoly shaft, 4 bearing carriers, 4 bearings, and 4 inserts.
