Default My winter project #1

This is my second attempt at recovering my dash. The first one turned out fine except the defroster holes. This time I put a piece of aluminum trim in the recess to hold the vinyl down. It's not the best but is a lot better than the cracked dash.

So, what was your procedure?
Looks good from the pics, but it's hard to see detail.

alordofchaos So, what was your procedure?
I had intended to take pictures as I was going but right after I stripped the dash my wife wrecked my van. The project then went into hurry up mode so that I had another vehicle I could drive.

First I stripped the old vinyl and put bondo in the cracks and sanded down smooth. I used a marine grade vinyl that had a little bit of stretch to it. I attached the vinyl with 3M high strength 90 adhesive. Putting the vinyl on was not hard but it was time consuming. What I added this time is the aluminum. I used 1/8" aluminum and cut it into the shape of the indent in the dash. I then cut the defroster holes just a little smaller than the ones in the dash. Between the holes in the aluminum I JB Welded some bolts to the back side then drilled holes in the dash for them to go through. After the vinyl was in place where I wanted it I put the aluminum on and bolted it down. From the back side of the dash I cut the vinyl at the defroster holes. I only cut one side and folded the vinyl back to cover the edge of the dash. For me it was easier to work with the aluminum in 3 pieces. If you were really careful it could be made with 1.

Tifosiman - I am located outside Tipp.
