I got a pair of spring compressors on sale for $8 from www.harborfreight.com When they arent on sale I think they are $11. They are very similar to the type sold by other companies for $50 or more. It would help if you have access to an impact wrench and a 15/16 socket, just try to tighten the two sides evenly as you compress the spring.

dont need spring compressors silly.... take the bolt loose- when fully loosened the spring hardly has any pressure on the strut- ive pulled quite a few apart w/ an impact and just laid them on the ground and put my foot on the housing- zip the bolt off and it hardly moves...and if you put a lowering spring on, it doesnt have any pressure!

I've got the Craftsman ones ($ 40). Work great.

Brought my struts to Pep Boys. They swapped my springs onto my Koni Adjustable housings for $20.

I never would have believed it was this easy until I did my last set of strut inserts this way. The good thing it doesn't even affect the alignment or having to mark the eccentric bolt. Legoland was a great help on thgis shortcut and saved me much misery

This is how I do it and it works fine. Did it with a spring compressor the first time, which is a big PITA, until I realised how little pressure there is. You only need the spring compressor to pu the stock springs back on a strut.
