Default LSD on an 83?

did the 1983 944's come with LSD?

if not, i can purchase a rebuilt one for 200$ canadian, seems like a really good price.

how would i go about checking the quality of it (other than hooking it up! LOL)

cheers.

You could order the 83 w/ LSD. If you can find a rebuilt TA, LSD or not, for $200 CD you should jump on that deal. I can't even find the LSD section of the transaxle for that cheap. You can turn the input shaft while holding the axle outputs and check for excess play. Trying to check the shifting on the floor is not easy.

With the car in a forward gear, turn one of the axle output shafts and see if the other side turns the same direction, if it doesn't it's not an LSD or the LSD unit isn't working right. The cars vin number won't tell you anything, the part number on the case will if you have the correct codes from PET for the model year transaxle you are looking at.

Anyone recommend an LSD? I'm probably going to put one in my spec 88 924s but am wondering whether to get stock LSD or a 'better' one. any ideas?

Will Spec 924 et you use a 'better' Torsen one or do have to use the OE disc type? Just curious

Torsen type are no goo for track use. Reason is they don't lock up on decel and this is a MAJOR benefit of the LSD. Lock up on decel in corner entry allows you to trail brake more effectivly thus gaining and advantage. The impact on accell out of a corner is minimal compared to stability underbraking from the clutch plate type LSD.

Thanks, I never knew about the decel lock-up benefits with the clutch types. I always loved the feel of the Torsen on my Miata but never really tracked the car other than DE's. Good info.
