Thumbs up Ford MAF - 944NA official project thread

Picked up my IAT Sensor from NAPA today - I will be going into San Antonio this weekend so I will pick up a handful of differnet electrical connectors and supplies. The part number for this two-wire sensor is : TS4039

Hopefully I will get my MAF in the mail tomorrow or Monday.

EDIT - sorry about the dog hair, I am going to vacuum this weekend........

How much horse/torque is there to be gained? I know the flap is an older design, but is it really that bad? Good luck, I'm interested in the results. Sounds like it might be a competitor to the $1000+ kits.

I found 2 contour MAF's, 95-98 and 99+. Which one is right?

From what I have read in the other MAF threads it is not so much the extra horse power as it is the ability to smoothly deliver it without the mechanical jitters you get from the swinging door.
Even hard conering or hitting a pothole hard could stop the doors smooth motion or even stutter it a little. Dirt and regular contamination can slow the swinging of the door (or slightly bind it) affecting throttle response.

I went into mine and put in the jumper wire across the pivot and used a very accurate HP meter and still see some slight jitter in the voltage.

I think the MAF is a nice way to smooth out and speed up the transitions between on and off throttle as well as perhaps giving a more accurate reading.

It is still an anolog device but it has no moving parts to give you grief...
But I am holding my breath and once I get caught up will do some testing...

Yeah, I'm not expecting any serious HP gains - but it will be nice to have a reasonably priced option to modernize the air metering method in my cars.

So is there a link to a previous thread for some of us to catch up?

Would love to see AFR's from anyone running this kind of MAF setup. I wonder if any tuning would be needed after changing.

Think I am going to vent my nose panel and tig up a nice stainless airfilter box that ill fit under the nosepanel. Just need to find an off-the-shelf filter that will work under there - should look good and sound even better!

Sharky, I believe a number of 951 guys have found that the nose is an area of low pressure on our cars. Maybe the 944's exposed bumper would change that, but I believe inside the fender well is the preferred and tested optimum location.

I am also a firm believer of the "under the header panel" theory. It was used from the factory on the S2's. So their is some reasoning behind it. I will post pics of my air intake/ vented nose panel setup next week. I will also be routing my maf under the header panel, just a different way.

Mine is routed thru the fender. A 91 Acura Intake (cheap on eBay) fits very well from the AFM (now MAF) to the fender wall. Looks like it was made for the 944. Then, put a mushroom filter on the end (HKS/HKS clone). If you like, I will take pics when I get my car back from the body shop this week.

you know that just is a temp measuring senser not a MAF (mass air senser) quanity senser right? as in
Intake
Air
Temp
senser

it is a thermister, only a resister that varies with temp....It has no way of varing signal voltage against a reference voltage...try a later model gm MAF...that would be a better choice
