Of course this list has the 87 944 at 158 hp and 10.2 CR. That is incorrect as the 87 944 had the same engine specs as the 86 944.

Yeah, pobody's nerfect. That's one I copied a long time back. But I know for certain 163HP on a US-spec early N/A is very optimistic.

Yep
163 bhp was for the 10.6:1 Compression ratio and no cat euro model
That was with a DIN hp rating too.

143 bhp was the SAE Net rating for the 9.5:1 Comp ratio US spec cars M44/02 Engines
I believe it went to 147 bhp in 85.5 M44/07 engines also with 9.5:1 CR
In the 88 they make 10.2:1 pistons an rated it to 158 hp. (forget about DIN or SAE NET however) Engine was M44/09

Default Chip Installation

Jgp0rsche just did a very nice write-up on installation of the chip in the 87-88 944S cars.

Here's a link:

Joe, here is my manual for my '87 N/A. The manual was printed during 6/86. As you can see the compression ratio is 9.7:1 for U.S spec M44/07 motors.

WOW! Got my 944SMax chip today (I ordered on Friday). Came in a nice little box. I came home at lunch, pulled the DME, and swapped chips.

Took it out for ~ 20 mile ride after work. Two things I noticed - it seems smoother and the power seems to come on earlier. It just pulls. Not sure how else to explain it; it seems to pull harder and earlier. On the hwy, it's nice because the gear you are in is more usable at a lower rpm (i.e., didn't feel the need to shift as much). On the back roads, it feels like it has a quicker take-off and the tach flies through the 3k-4k rpm range and then just keeps going. Before, it would push more slowly through the lower rpm's and then the power would come in b/w 5k-6k.

At the end of my drive, I saw two freinds walking down the road, so I dropped into 2nd, and ran it hard through 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and had the biggest grin on my face. That kind of performance was what I expected when I got my 944S and now I have it. I would definitely recommend this chip to other 'S' owners.

Thanks Russell!

Russell was kind enough to send a new version of his chip out to me and mentioned that he thought he'd been able to make some improvements. Again, got the chip right away (Wed.), put it in, but didn't have a chance to drive it at all. Changed the oil today, and then took it for a spin...just got back.

The amount of throttle response is RIDICULOUS. This thing pulls VERY hard. There is a considerable difference in the amount of power available at the low rpm's - there's none of the "lag" that I was experiencing before. I was somewhat skeptical about noticing any improvements, but there is a HUGE difference. Throttle response reminds me somewhat of my old 5.0.

If you own an "S," go spend the best $150 you'll ever spend on your car.

Well done Russell!

Thanks again! I can't wait to see the new dyno numbers Saturday, from the way everybody talks about the V5 944S chip the numbers should be even more impressive than before, especially on the lower RPM ranges.

We'll know Saturday!

Yes, I will be dynoing the V5 944S chip SAT! I can't wait. We're expecting the big power we were hoping for with the other chips.
