Machine stimulated is better. That way the stimulation is consistent.

Jon, there's a "Parts number cross-reference thread stickyed" already...

But nobody reads it

Well, Safelite says that they can supply the late no antenna windshield as shown in Jon's photo for $228.56 installed.

I currently have an appintment setup with them for first thing tomorrow morning... we'll see if they get it right this time.... I made the girl take specific notes about late vs early width differences. We'll see - I'll report in tomorrow!

Whee, Safelite guy just left... and I still don't have a windshield.

Jon, I showed him your photo of an 87 NA with PPG FW 360. We held a PPG FW360 up to my car... it is 3/4-1" too narrow. Same as what we had last time.

Safelite now officially hates me, two unsuccessful install trips, and the only thing they say is that I HAVE to go with the antenna-laden FW 505 at more than double the price. 'It is the only thing that will fit' they said. Argh.

Luckily the installer is cool and said he'd try to look some things up, but FW 360 an FW 505 are the only things in the computer for a 944. I mentioned the 968 windshield ala Travis... they really don't like the 'conversion' jobs, you could see it in his face when I said it.

As an aside, my 83 is sitting here with perfect glass, which is a Pilkington FW 360. Sure seems to me that is the narrow size then. Any chance there was an shift of some sort mid-87, kind of like the engines? I don't know what else to think right now.

VERY unhappy at the prospect of a $500+ antenna GLASS windshield for track use in a car with no radio.

My friend and i both think the 968 antenna glass should work but we havent checked. This is because with subtle differences like the mounting of the 1/4 windows, who knows what is different about the windshield. Perhaps we can get someone with a 968 to make some rough measurements of the width of the glass.

Eric, i really dont know what to tell you. The glass fit my car perfectly, no gaps on either side..i watched the guy put it in. Can anyone else with a non-antenna windshield confirm part #'s for a late model car?

Hate to keep dragging this one up, but I just got a call from the safelite guy, he did some followup research for me and here's what I was just told:

Their computer lists (all PPG):

FW360 as non-antenna glass for 83-87 944 block size 29x54.5 - $230
FW505 antenna glass for 88-91 944S block size 29x55 - $852!!!
FW710 glass for 92 968 block size 29x57 - not priced

So am I actually seeing that there may be a windshield change in mid-87? Or is their computer wrong for model year 87, and it should show the 505?

Either way, they claim to only be able to get antenna glass from the dealer - $850 bucks is just not gonna happen. I'm going to call around this afternoon some more, but what gives... it seriously can't be this frickin difficult. I need some beer and its only 2:30 .

Edit : Called Sunset, my local dealer. With PCA discount: $734.75 for the part!

One Final Edit : After many many phone calls this afternoon, there is NO PART for a late non-antenna windshield. If you have one, then it is the early part and you likely have a big gap covered up by a rubber strip. See the block sizes above.

FW 505 has been superceded by FW603... cost of the glass itself is just under 400 bucks... most places I've talked since we figured that out will install it for 450-475. Not cheap, but that is the ONLY part available that will correctly fit a late 944.

Exactly what I learned yesterday. This gets suckier and suckier by the minute! My car could be totalled for less than the cost of one of these damn windhields!

Misery loves company - I called around a few place here in STL, all were higher than Safelite - one was $1100. I paid saflite ~470 (glass for an 87 turbo). That was bad but the guy didn't even get the rubber trim gasket even on boths sides (one side is short). ...jeez... Bruce
