Hockeydude - did you get a windshield yet? A guy from Cinci offered his to me if he could get it removed cleanly. I just sent him a PM suggesting he contact you.

I've decided to get one from a local auto glass shop. It will be sans antenna - but it's worth the $300 savings in my mind.

Best of luck with yours.

OK - I had a local shop order the FW360. I took my car over there yesterday and insisted we lay the replacement glass over the windshield before anything else. Damn good thing we did. The sonofabitch was too small!!

Techno - how the hell did you get the 360 to fit your car? There were 1/2" gaps on either side of the windshield when we did the comparison. The guy looked in his computer and found some dimensions. The 360 is 29.0 x 54.5 (inches, I assume). The FW505 (the one with the antenna - and going for $500) was listed at 29.0 x 55.0

Needless to say - I am not a happy camper. See below an example of what a happy camper would look like.....

I have no idea how it fit, but it does. And yes, my car is an '87. I watched him put the glass in and it fit fine, no gaps on either side.

Scott, ask your guy to check the measurements on the 968 windshield. That may be the ticket to getting a proper fit non-antenna.

Looks like the FW505 windshield has been superseded by FW603. It's only $475. I feel so much better.

On the 968 idea. Does anyone know if the mirror attachements the same? (I.e would I need a 968 mirror?) It's a minor detail - but still a consideration.

PET lists the same part # for the 944 and 968 rear view mirrors....a 477 (Volkswagen) part none the less!

Doesn't matter. The 968 windshield is two inches wider than the 944 windshield (29 x 57 vs 29 x 55).

OUCH!!!! I'm starting to get pissed just READING THIS!!!! Can only imagine how you're feeling... Another Big Porsche Screw is going on here. How/WHY do they do things like this...? This is the first I've ever heard of a non-antenna 944 windshield OR a 968 windshield not fitting... Good info to have though... I hope someone chimes in w/some helpful advice quickly...

Isn't there a difference in airbag/non-airbag windshields, too? Might account for some of that price difference (just a guess, though) - even if the airbags were optional, the windshields were probably all changed.

Could be- hope to God it doesn't include a change in dash b/c I'm about to TRY to stick a recovered non-AB dash into my AB car... That could really screw things up...

I have a parts car in my garage with a good late style windshield. You are more then welcome to come try and remove it. It's yours for free if you can get it out with out breaking it.

I've also got one of the 968 style antennas for sale for $30 if anyone wants it.

Here is something to add.. this is straight from my friend Tom (he posts here also, but has been very busy as of late) who i mentioned in another post (or earlier in this one) about the subject of the 968 windshield fitting late model cars.

"I was guessing the block size is a typo or something. I have yet to see a post where someone tried the 968 and it was too big. The windshield's external black plastic trim for the late 944 and the 968 is the same part number (add this info to your next post)"

He is right about the plastic trim piece that goes around the glass, its the exact same part # (944.559.535.03). I find it hard to believe they extended the windshield an extra two inches. We really need anyone with a 968 to just take a rough measurement from each a-pillar.

Someone who needs a new windshield and who hasnt been black listed by Safelite or there local glass company should call and ask the glass guy to bring a 968 windshield to test out for us... .

Hey I resemble that remark! Black listed by Safelite... what a life I lead.

I actually plan to call them back in a few minutes... they installer said he'd happily bring 2 next time to test. I'm thinking one FW603, and one FW 710 (968 model windshield).

For those not following this multi-thread saga, here's the other thread we've been chatting in. Check out my last post for my current fitment understanding. As Jon said, I need to see with my own eyes how these other two fit, only then will we know for sure.

To add more food for though, my friend Tom said the only reason why the 968 windshield would not work or fit right is because its meant for an airbagged equipped car only. So it will have some kind of rubber or metal strip along the bottom edge. Removing that strip will allow proper fit of a 968 windshield onto a regular flush mounted windshield car.

Travis also mentioned this in the other thread.

"The difference between the air bag and non air bag windshields is a rubber strip that is added to the bottom. Slice it off and whala.. you have a non antenna windshield for an 86 with no air bags. Worked out fine for me. Just a tip if anyone else runs into this problem."

Good luck Eric...put this one to rest once and for all!!
