I just finished this dash for a fellow Rennlist member. Its dark blue leather air bag version with custom defroster trim.
As mentioned before, recovering a dash requires careful precison cutting of the factory defroster holes. It's very time consuming and leaves no margin for error.
What I did here was strip all the vinyl, straighten the dents and bends caused by he wrecking yard, fix the cracks, cut the dash to accept the vents, add engineered foam padding, trimmed the foam, drilled holes to take #4 black trim screws that hold the defroster trim pieces, then covered it in leather.
I wish I had a before shot of this dash. It was pretty bad.

how much would perforated steel speaker grille material affect the airflow? If the defroster still flows enough air through a grill like that, it could look quite nice.

The issue for me is how the edges are finished. I thought of a mesh or grill material, but was still faced with how to finish it off.
These trim pieces cover the raw edges of the leather completely.

My interior is that exact color and I have an air bag dash as well. My only concern is my ability to the the dash out and back in without fracking things up. Probably a winter project.
What is your turn around time Rob?

I think your dash work is amazing, but I don't think this alternative looks as good as your earlier versions.

Getting it right is somewhat perplexing. I know what I want, and a design solution has already been done however the tooling and prototype cost is a lot more than I want to invest right now.

Not that Rob needs it, but I'll vouch for him and his work, as I talked with him and saw his products first hand at 944Fest. We (the 944 gang) NEED to support him on his efforts, as he is giving us the first real option for dealing with bad dashboards.
Well done, Rob!

Very very nice looking work; I remember your first thread about recovering 944 dashes, and how happy I was to see a better than factory solution to the problem of cracked dashes.
