Default The "Porsche" Sound

On my recently purchased 1990 s2 ( got it about 2 months ago) ive have noticed that it is rather quiet and does not have that Porsche Whine to it. i have watched many videos of 944's and my buddy who has an 87 944s also has the distinct whine. mine does not... is that bad or just normal for the s2? what causes the whine?

well the "whine" in most 944's is due to the belts being either too tight or a roller that is starting to wear out. Be glad yours doesnt. Now putting some better exhaust on the car will give it a real porsche sound at the bumper.

Aircooled 911's 'whine' due to the cooling fan.

My 944 whines because it's got a turbo on it. (951S)

Turboed, aircooled 911's whine because they are the mutts nutts.

Turbo 911 owners whine because parts cost so much.

The 3.0 liter engine whines less than the 2.5. I don't know exactly why, maybe it's just other noises being louder on the larger engine so the whine is drowned out. I just know that my 968 doesn't whine noticably, and I expect your S2 sounds similar.

A clip of my 944

A clip of my 968

I used my brother's ipod, with the italk which sucks (well i think they both suck). The 944 sounds cooler than in reality and the 968 sounds a little less cool than in reality.

I noticed in your avatar your S2 looks like it has the rubber spoiler instead of the fiberglass wing. 1990 and 1991 S2s should have the wing - if you ever see your PO again you should take retribution.

my car sounds nothing like the 944, more like the 968 but mine is even quieter lol not that it matter but i think the whine sounds kinda cool and as for the wing, that does puzzle me a bit. the car is from japan and is a ROW model so that may be what it is. i have run the vin and checked the tags, everything is legit. seems wierd!

My 90' S2 has a solid hatch glass(no plug for the rear whiper) and the rubber spoiler. The car only has 2 previous owners and I am told it came that way.

The PO I bought it from was roommates with the person who bought it from the dealer.

I did some searching and a lot of the 90' S2's didnt have the fiberglass wing, it was a option.

Oops, my mistake. I heard the wing came out in 1990, I just figured it would be standard. The spoiler is more practical anyway - you can't put stuff on the wing.

Mine has always had a whine, before and after the belt changes. It's not so much of a whine, but just sounds like a hair dryer being revved up and down, whatever you would call that. Past 4,000 RPM it turns into that classic Porsche howl, a sound which i'll never, ever tire of. Lovely sounding engine, I have no problems turning down the radio just to listen to it.

The wing was first introduced on the RoW 944 Turbo in '90. Wasnt put on the S2 until '91. 89-90 S2s had the regular rubber hatch spoiler.

There were several cars at the fest that sounded terrific screaming down straights!!! I prefer the sound of the 944 turbos to many of the 911's. ( and i own a 911, go figure).

I've never heard a 944 or 911 that sounds as good as a 928 though.

Turbo has a whoosh sound while overtightened belts (timing and balance shaft) and worn out rollers make whining sounds. Fans make a whirling sound when they kick in but should not be on all the time. As someone else mentioned earlier, be glad your car does not whine. As far as the 928 is concerned, the stock exhaust sounds smoother though not much sound better than a V8 other than ferrari V12s.
