Just ordered my helmet for the 'fest track day. Dan P was instrumental with his graphic depiction of using loaner helmets. he said "It gets really hot in there. It's like sharing underwear with another guy." That was enough for me!
I wonder how he knows what it's like to share underwear with another guy.... .

Hopefully you got a Snell 2005 SA-rated helmut. Though many places allow for Snell M-2005 helmets, the SA rating is better suited for track driving.
Regarding loaner helmets - ew. No. Never. That is all.

Dan, you know I think you're the Man - I was just having a little fun whilst getting ready for the track - Actually went with an SA-00 - it was lots cheaper and I'll gladly upgrade in 3 or 4 years if the thrack bug gets me

just for ref- the loaner helmets im bringing are borrowed from PCA- a few are SA95 and we have three or four BRAND NEW ones that are SA2005. Not sure that many people will be borrowing so i may assign them to people and make them sign them out for the day, so i know they all get back to me.

the ratings are based on how the impact occurs and how the helmet is made to protect you. An SA helmet is made for blunt force impact like a rollbar and has a different fire retardant for say if your trapped in the car during a fire. M helmets dont have the fire retardant and are meant to slide along the ground more than impact.

Actually, while some M helmets may be designed around a different sort of impact than an SA (and vise-versa), it's an overstatement to say the Snell rating has anything to do with how they are designed. It has to do with how they are tested.
The SA test adds one more anvil to the tests. It's the only testing difference. I think it's a matter of 4 anvils vs 3 for M (or 3 vs 2 - can't remember). M requires a larger eye port than what is allowed by SA. And of course the fire retardant liner is required by SA.
Back to construction, there have been and still are shells that are the same for SA as they are for M. The only difference in construction is the liner. So, you cannot count on the construction to be different between M and SA.
FWIW, IMHO a M helmet should be perfectly acceptable for DE. No group I know of requires fire suits for DE, so the SA requirement just seems silly to me.
