Default exhaust resonates at 3200 rpm plus harsh vibration

Hi,

I own an 89 S2. My exhaust always resonates (read starts vibrating like hell under me) at 3200 rpm and I feel general harsh vibration. This always happens at 3200 rpm wether I'm in gear or not. From what I have concluded, this is necessarily the balance belt being off by a couple degrees. Is this right or should I look at something else? TIA.

Sounds like the first place to look is the balance shaft orientation and belt tension

If that doesn't help it would be motor mounts most likely.

Sound could also be a bad torque tube or a bent shift rod vibrating against the torque tube , bad catalytic converter, muffler, or exhaust leak.

I would also think balance shafts. The torque tube in my 87 lasted until 175,000 miles

I just replaced my torque tube with a rebuild. It did the same before and does the same after... I aslo run a straight pipe instead of a cat, but the same effect was observed with a cat just a tad less pronounced. Thanks for the replies people. Any advice is appreciated.

Balance shafts yep... not just out 180 degrees out of phase. You may need to pull the gears off to make sure they are lined up right.
