PS pump falls out of car - repost?
I know it's not a repost in my case, but I seem to recall someone else just having this problem, yet couldn't find the thread. Real sucky ride home from work (after being all happy yesterday about getting the AC working, finally). Noticed that there was no or weak power steering when driving home - right from pulling out of the parking lot.
Pulling off the highway, I hear a slight "pinging" noise - dragging a light strip of metal, what it sounds like.
I know it can't be good, but finish driving the mile to the house. Look underneath, sure enough the PS pump is hanging by the hoses.
I just rebuilt it not 1000 miles ago. Must've been too much oil/fluid on the threads. So now I have to hunt down not only a new belt, but also those stupid bushings and such...
Oh, and yes, the tensioner did snap, so that's gotta go too.

that sucks.
when i sold my '84, i had taken the P/S belt off and had my mechanic plug all the stuff that made it a power rack.
it stayed on there ok, and actually, i also had an A/C delete on there as well, so i only had one belt (man, it felt like it revved really fast!).
a few months later i tracked down the guy that bought the car from this race shop that was supposedly going to turn the car into a drift car
it was in pretty good condition, but the guy didnt have much mechanical aptitude.
he points at the power steering pump, which is now just hanging by the tensioner rod (I KNOW!), and he's like "yeah, i guess this car had A/C?"
i was pretty dumbfounded..............
i guess it's that little bolt on the top that just comes out? the one that has that little....i dont know what they're called, but they're those cylinders with a line through 'em.
edit- that doesnt surprise me that that happened after you finished working on the belts.
that's what happened, right?

Once the PS tensioner breaks the unit will work for awhile until every stinking bolt comes loose and the unit falls off. Just be glad you didn't drag it on a speed bump and break the mounting tab on the block.

the "worst case scenarios" you lay out sometimes give me the heebie jeebies.
make me worry about things that could happen to my car.

Yeah, that's scary!!
Yes, I'd done all the belts as well as rebuilding the pump itself with the kit from Rennbay (Rennbay!!!!)
I have fixing stuff twice...

That sucks Vaughan! Mine wasn't quite the diaster you experienced was but I did manage to loose that front bushing when the front nut disappeared. Just piled some washers on in the meantime untill I can source another bushing. Loctite is out friend!
Does anyone know the dimensions of those bushings? It should be hard to make our own.

Shouldn't be hard to reverse-engineer one - I do plan on making my own...

I managed to bolt the sucker back on there with washers for bushings.
Taught me to leave my headlights on all the way into the garage, in case some nutjob decides to leave stacks of lumber/bricks/construction materials in my parking spot.

Happened to me once, that pivot bolt is the weak point and mechanics who don't know what they're doing don't help eiher. Mine fell off, hit a bump, swung up and lodged beside the engine.
Buy a new bolt and spacers etc., all correct, not a bodge job, install them correctly and you should be OK. Check your hose connections.

Yes it is!!! I haven't decided which car to bring... the same old beat-up looking (but solid) 931, the racecar (pretty, but can't drive it and didn't sign up for the DE), or the 924S (automatic, not as much fun on those long drives with the high revs, even if it does cruise somewhat nicer that the 931)... The project 931 is still stillborn, backburnered, and living in Lincoln Park now at a friends while I try to move to a place with room for me to work on it...
