Default Proud new owner of a 944. Need some help although :(

I went ahead and picked up an 86 944 this morning. Beautiful car but I am having a few probs and Im hoping you guys could possibly help me out with them. Heres a pic of my new car btw:

1st problem: I purchased the car without a key. I got the car started with a screwdriver but the wheellock is engaged. What is the bets way to dis-engage the wheel lock ?

2nd problem: I started up the car, everything seems fine somewhat, but theres a loud tick and the pulley on what I beleive to be either the AC compressor or power steering pump is wobbling un-evenly. Its the pulley next to the crank pulley on the lower driver side area. The car also feels like its sputtering a tad bit. Any suggestions?

Also, how exactly would I check for engine codes? Thankyou kindly!

Bought car without a key and you're starting it with a screw driver?

I'm sure you're legit but, I don't think I would admit that :-)

Welcome to Rennlist!

The wobbling pulley is probably because the crank bolt was not torqued correctly, or the spacer washer was put on backwards. Not terribly hard to correct, but does require a flywheel lock, a 24mm or 15/16th socket and a good breaker bar.

Congrats on the purcahse and welcom to rennlist.

The power stearing pump is on its own belt down the in lower left corner of the engine, Ac compressor is the bottom right and altenator is the top right. Altenator and Ac is on a ribbed belt and the power stearing is on its own belt. I believe you can purchase a new ignition cylinter from peregon-products.com of pelicanparts.com.

Also it's worth noting these cars are interference engines (valve will hit piston and bend when it breaks) and if the timming belt breaks you're going to have to spend 2-3k having the head rebuilt.

if its next to the crank and its on the drivers side its the a/c compressor. Surprised to hear that one would wobble. If its the ps then its the power steering-more common. If its ticking-make sure you have the oil topped off. The lifters may make some noise for a little while if its been sitting because they get pumped out of oil-it should go away if your topped off and it warms up alittle. If not start checking things out like is there a spun rod bearing or is it just noisy injectors.
As far as getting the wheel unlocked you need to remove the housing for the switch and its under the dash, and it has sheer bolts holding it on there- youll need a drill if you take that off.

Thanks guys for the help!

xsboost you were dead on, it was the lifters afterall. The ticking slowly went away.

Can I just remove the steering wheel and get to the locked collar that way? Also its reccomended to change the timing belt every 30k miles? what the heck!!!! Hah!

My AC blows extremely hot.. hrmm, wonder if it just needs a charge......trying to think of anything else.. oh yeah, is the moonroof only supposed to pop up about 3 inches?

Im so anxious to get the wheel unlocked so I can drive this sucker! Thanks again guys for the help. Its much appreciatted!

If you can start it with a screwdriver I'm afraid you need a new ign. lock cylinder. You can either buy a new one or hope a good locksmith can match it to the doors. Even drilling out the shear bolts won't solve the steering lock issue without the correct key and lock cylinder. You might look into a complete lock set from a parted car; it might be easier if you want matching keys.

I popped the ignition switched out of the lock cylinder...thats how I start the car with a screwdriver. The lock cylinder is still in place. I think I found the previous owner, im going to pray he still has a key for the car .

This just doesnt sound right.......who sells a car without the keys?......who starts a car with a screwdriver (other than a thief)......and you think you found the owner???....then who sold you the car??

But if you are legit well then welcome and congrats on buying a 944 in the best color.
