Default 944 Spec Car Build Journal *UPDATED 1/10/07*

Not having contributed anything of value here, I thought I would offer something I haven't seen 'round these parts. I'm "building" an '88 924S for the NASA 944 Spec class racing series (for the SoCal region, but similar classes exist elsewhere).

If anybody is interested, please check out this site for pictures, experiences, tips (not many yet...) and more damn pictures of a Spec car build-up.

944 Spec Car Build Journal

Any comments, questions, flames or suggestions are welcomed.

Cheers,
Chris B.

Nice... you went to town on the webpage. I too am building a spec 944 car, but I got a little lazy when it comes to the documentation I will say I have already started to hide all my receipts. The last thing I need is to have them all totaled up!

I wish I would have known about your site earlier...you should have advertised it; it looks good and the pictures are quality...good work. I've been getting ideas from other areas too, so it's good to have another source.

I know the feeling. I was thinking of posting my $$ spent, but I'm not sure I even want to know. So far it's only ~$1300 including the car

My suspension is going to cost more than my car

Is there a spec for 928s? We had a thread about PCA allowing H and F classes to have 928s, but we will n ot be very competitive there. Does NASA have a better spec class for 4.0L+ V-8 coupes? I couldn't see it with a quick search.

There is a very good chance they will be included in a new SCCA Improved Touring class.

What would that allow you do do? Any motor swapping within models? (5.0L32V into 2900lb 78 body with 2.75 rear end?)

Is there somewhere I can find out more about this?

TIA

Here is a link to the rules for IT:

http://www.scca.com/_FileLibrary/Fil...vedTouring.pdf

The new class will allow larger wheels than any current class. The only swapping allowed is for cars on the same spec line. In the case of the 944 8v, all years of 2.5 are lumped together, but no swapping between 2.5 and 2.7 or between 8v and 16v.

You won't be able to put a 32v into a 78. Rear end gears are free as long as they fit into the stock, unmodified housing.

Here is info on the proposed rules:

http://itforum.improvedtouring.com/f...showtopic=8103

And here is info on the currently proposed cars (not final):

http://itforum.improvedtouring.com/f...showtopic=8126

The 928 is not currently on this list, but since I'm involved with the proposal and a member of the ITAC I have some inside info that it stands a decent chance of making it.

NASA has a catch-all series called PT (Performace Touring, http://www.performancetouring.com/) that you could run in, but aside from that, there is no 928 Spec racing that I'm aware of. Hell, I can't remember the last time I even saw a 928 driving around (unfortunately).

I've actually done pretty well so far, thanks to some ebay deals and other scores on these forums. When building the track car though, I find myself unable to put off fixing things I see that are marginal. So I'm doing a bit more than planned, but when she's done, essentially all of the important bits and pieces in the whole car will be solid. A 20 year refresh if you will.

I have some more pics including the new alternator and a lightweight billet bracket, along with the completed brake system. I'll update the site tonite with Part5. I use Picasa to make the site quickly... it's ok but the compression engine it uses is horrible. I've posted the fuel lines here, and I just ordered a fuel pump and roller kit, which I'm going to do when I swap out my leaky cam tower next weekend.

Only thing left after that is suspension, and the install of the new Sparco seats. The suspension cost is something I don't want to talk about either. But make sure you get the NASA spec 944 package deal from Paragon, it will at least save you some dollars.

Kibort and Anderson did Speedvision series, and the PCA has some locals, but yeah, not many.

I looked it over, thanks. It looks pretty good, and it seems like the car, well prepared, on very good tires, would not be bumped a peg up, as it just says "928" with no designations.

I've only run one NASA event (HPDE at Cal Speedway), but it seems like a organization.

Get your 928 out there so I can poke a stick at it

Looking good... I have been fighting the full dash removal but at this point I think it will just be the easiest way to gut what is underneath. I'm going to leave the heater core in mine for defog capability... we get a bit of that stuff up here in the soggy PNW.

I hope to get a bit more work done on my car this weekend. Had to finish off some home improvement projects first or the little lady was going to shut me down

I look forward to your next installment... have fun with those wires!
