That story sounds so familiar...two years ago I was hit in the side and my car was totalled by a Dodge Durango...interesting...I understand how you feel!

Sounds like you might be wanting a new one? Send me a PM.

Your insurance guy is a friggin idiot... I had that fender bender with my wife, left driver's side quarter had to be replaced because she hit that 944 beautiful fat *** cheek... I told him he wasn't going to total my car and he was going to let me pick the shop (Finishing Touch in Fountain Hills AZ, they do nothing but Ferari's and high end German cars). First time I ever sat in a GT 40 (one of the originals from the 60's but I digress...).

My wife's fault OK (same policy, it's as though I hit my car..) so you have way more leverage because it was someone else's fault. Don't let him dick you around..

They should then give you a check for $3500 ($4500 minus your $1000 deductible) and then go after the other driver for what the damage is and when they collect they should then pay you the $1000 deductible amount.

How much they can get at salvage would only come into play if the cost to fix the damage was more then the value of the car. Then the salvage amount is how much you would have to pay them to keep the car.

Somebody has their logic all screwed up.

Was any one ticketed at the accident scene?
Seems messed up to me.. but this is what the guy is telling me.
Maybe I should try to talk to one of the managers at his office to get the skinny of the policy I have.

Check my post, bottom of last page. 80% damage is pretty much an industry standard total limit. Some will do 70% if there is mechanical damage.

You are at 71% with $4500 damage and $6300 ACV. You should get $4500. Car is repairable.

Hey, same thing happened to me "PROGESSIVE"!!!!!!!! my agent wouldn't even deal with aftermarket or used parts, only factory parts. Crap, I even found all the parts and told him where I could get them, and at what price.....no go !Again....PROGRESSIVE!!!!!! He salvaged it out. Said it was worth $3500. I took the money less deductable, bought it back for $500. Got Fiberworks front and rear bumpers for it. The only problem with a salvage title is how much a buyer will give you for it with that title. If it's only cosmetic, towers are not bent and you dont think you'll be selling it, buy it back, do most of the work yourself. I'm happy I did.

Your insurance guy does not know better. The body is the same from 83-89 for the n/a. There is no reason why you are limited to just the 1989 model for parts.

He says that as part of the "make whole" deal (the way it was before the accident) they would have to use parts from the same year.. or newer.

Thank you for the input!

I am really trying to avoid a Salvage title.. I understand it can be a hoop-jumper to get the car inspected.

I agree this sounds fair..

So he should not be factoring in salvage value in his determination of totaling??

I am going to bring it to a shop and get a full evaluation. It really needs a professional to go over it.. make sure the damage is repairable vs. replaceable and that I am not missing anything major that could change the whole story.

incessant, if your interior is nice as well as the paint, please fix the car! It's a shame that these great cars are getting junked left and right 'cause of low values and idiot apraisers. Shure, parts are expensive and they are hard to work on but that only helps the owner build his character....if it doesn't kill you it can only make you stronger...

They will probably tell you to take the car to claims center or they will send out an adjuster. Show him the car and the estimate. Refuse to allow them to total the car. Have receipts showing all you have put into the vehicle. They should settle. Then find a good independent body shop. You should be able to come out of this just fine.
Well.. I was going to take it to an independent shop..in hopes of a lower estimate. I think the dealership estimate would be quite high, in which case they would surely total the car.
