Default fantastic pic of the turbo S at autocross

A local journalist snapped this pic of me at the nissan autocross on the weekend. Full credit to Matt Haase for taking the picture.

Great picture! Looks like you need stiffer springs up front though

Agreed. That's stock M030 with 968 sway bars.

This is why I haven't DE'd/autocrossed on 20 year old springs. Sweet pic though.

Youre worried about the age of the springs or the stock/low spring rate?

I just DE'd my street/stock 89T a week ago for the first time in years (my other track car is in the hospital). I have been DE'ing and racing much stiffer cars for past 7-8 years, so I was not expecting very much of the stock M030 suspension on track. But I was actually quite impressed with how well an out of the box 944TS can still run with newer and more modified cars.

I did have another 944T driver (his car is running original bilstein turbo cup suspension and factory TC springs) comment on how much my car was bouncing and floating around in a couple of the high speed sweeping corners. But all in all, the car had reasonably good handling, didnt roll and pitch in transition as much as I was expecting, and ran much faster lap times than I would have dreamed. Our PCA region does timed runs at the DEs, and out of the 60 plus cars than ran the timed runs, the only "stock" car that was faster than my little old black 944 was a '02 996 GT2. The only faster 944T was a factory 87 Escort/Turbo Cup car.

Again, having been club racing for several years, running 500 lb/in plus spring rates, I had forgot just how capable the stock TS really was/is.

Ditto on getting stiffer springs. Just got mine done. HUGE difference. Don't be afraid to go stiffer. I'm running 400lb springs front, 31mm hollow torsion bar rear (380-ish effective). And this is NOT too stiff on our very bumpy grip-lacking lot.

Here's my car before the upgrade:

Here's a shot after (from this past weekend - took second in class, BTW) :

Based on the angle of my head, it looks like the turns are similar. Interesting to see the difference...

Honestly I'd be worried about both the age of the springs/shocks as well as the lower spring rate. DE events are fun, but I'd rather spend $1000 on new springs than a new front clip.

By the time you factor in the 'while you're in there' stuff, you're a bit over $1000.

Some of the "while you're in there" items are:
- Better front control arms
- Caster blocks
- Delrin bushings for the torsion bars, solid bushings for the torsion bar housing and solid bushing to replace the tranny mount.
- Rear coil over helper springs or full coil over kit
- camber plates
- new shocks
- and the list goes on.

Figure around $4k to $5k when all is said and done. (don't ask me how I know...)

I've been eyeing the bilstein escort setup for later this year or next. My car doesn't scrape except on driveways, so that photo is about the closest that that splitter comes to the ground on the course. I was getting a hint of rub on the fender from the 255 tires though. I have still to swap my camber plates over from my n/a.

No need to be worried about that - unless your springs are rusted well beyond belief, a spring is not going to break, regardless of age.

Sure, old/failed shocks would be a problem in high performance driving. But stock springs and ok condition stock shocks will work fine for a DE event. The car may not be as fast as you would like or feel as tight as you would want, but its not going to break apart. Nothing that would cause any need to replace the front clip unless you hit something.

The only part of the 944 suspension that will break off when old/worn out, is the front control arm ball joints. Which is a whole separate maintenance item/topic of discussion by itself. And unless it breaks at high speed causing a big wreck, it usually only damages the fender, the strut, and the tie rod.

your dumb

your going way too fast and cant drive or break something.
