Default Rear view mirror is loose

Since I got the car, the rear view mirror has been wobbly. I tried using silicone sealant in the mount, but the mirror is still not tight into the mount.

Is there a way to tighten the mirror without breaking my windshield, or, having the mount pop off? I HATE looking into my rear view and seeing the world shaking behind me!

Andy, It's loose at the window mounting point? I remember when mine broke at a plastic joint and just fell off after being shakey for a wile, I had to replace the entire mirror.

If it's the connection of the mirror to the base, yes you can tighten it a little. If it's the 90-degree elbow ball-and-socket joint having gotten loose you'll have to replace the mirror. I had to do that on my n/a.

The mount is tight on the windshield. The mirror slides onto the mount, but seems like it isn't tight. Could be the tabs on the mount are slightly worn, causing space between the mount and the mirror?

mine does that too, but the damn braket is so hard that im afraid if i bend the tabs to tighten it, ill break the damn windshield. IM thinking of putting alittle shim in there or just trying to bend the tabs again.

shim it up with a thin toothpick. just jam it in gently and snap off the end.

Any junk yards near you? My mirror ball and socket joint too is wobbly. I'm just going to buy another mirror from the wrecking yard.

thats not the prob. though, the braket doesnt fit tightly into the metal braket that is glued to the windshield. I found this out on mine when i hit second real hard at an autox and it went flying into the back seat.

A shim will probably work! I tried silicone, but that's too soft I guess...so the mirror still vibrates. The ball and socket are fine--I ordered a new mirror from Vertex, only to find it did the same thing as my old one! So I returned it.

Press the two little tabs on the mount in just a hair to tighten it. Press with a flathead screwdriver. Gently.

If you're not comfortable doing that, in fear of pressing too hard and breaking the windshield, put a piece of masking tape on the mirror portion to take up the slack.

I have done it both ways, and both ways worked.

Masking tape, eh? Sounds like a plan to me! Thanks.
