Boxster advice from you guys...the guys I trust the most...
Ok, I found a boxster for a good price and I can get out from underneath the charger (I like the Charger, but its not what I wanted...i wanted a boxster). My payments will go down $75 bucks, but there are pros and cons...
Pros:
Funner car
Nicer looking
PORSCHE!!!
Worth more
manual transmission
car I really want
better gas mileage
pretty good trunk(s) space
Cons:
No warranty
Not a new car
not as practical as far as people space goes
insurance might go up some
I am not a huge fan of the color...
Mileage
What do you guys think? Here is a link to the one I am looking at http://www.exclusive-motors.com/99_B...istingPage.htm

Most people will recommend the later 2.7 cars. In my opinion though, the 2.5 is still nice, and the prices are very attractive.
The car in the ad looks pretty good. I would not hesitate to look deeper into this car. As always, a PPI is your friend.

Yes a PPI is yout friend, one thing to look out for is the Rear Main Seal, botht eh Boxsters and the 996's have always leaked. This has been a very common problem See if that has been done, if it hasn't it can be quite costly to fix. The other thing to watch out for is that some of the 98-99 Boxsters had casting problems in the cylinder walls of the motors causing pre-mature engine failure.
Lastly the 2.5's are nice cars and great handling cars to, however compared to you 951 you may find it underpowered. I would hold out until you can fnd a nice 2.7 liter for close to the same price

Known issues for all Boxsters:
-Engine cases are known to split and leak coolant under EXTENSIVE TRACKING
-Power Top Motor Issues
-1999 motors have been known to slip sleeves if under 50,000 miles
NOTE: I have only heard that 20% of owners that I have known suffered this failure after putting anywhere from 20,000-50,000 miles. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN TO EVERY 1999 MOTOR
-Plastic Window (pre 2003) hazes up
-Cars before 1998 must have 17" wheels at most on the car, suspension cannot handle 18"
-I have seen cracked exhaust manifolds (very rare, but possible)
-EXTENSIVE FUN FACTOR
Good luck on your purchase! It will be WELL WORTH IT!

I had an '01 Boxster, it was a great car. No problems at all. It is much nicer than my '89 951 in almost every way. It however isn't as fast as this car and not nearly as suited for the track, because of the convertible top. But I really miss driving with the top down and the smooth comfortable ride around town, while still having excellent handling. And I've almost forgotten what low end torque is, now that I have a turbo. They are totally different cars and the Boxster is tons of fun. Find a good one and get it.

there was an article in panorama a year or so ago about the sleeve issues.
i am at a stage in life (possible midlife crisis....again) where i am against getting into deep debt, especially for a car. if you dont have the reserves for the possible repairs dont get into it.

I just sold my 97 Boxster and i think it was fun to drive , BUT it was a money pit. After owning that car I have bad feeling about Porsche. I think there quality was/is poor and even with a know issue with the 99 motors they still refuse to fix the cars unless your the first owner and sometimes not even then. So i sold the Boxster and now I have 3 944's.

I've got the money for repairs and stuff, and I could do a lot of it myself. That wasn't really a main concern. My main concern was, is it a good decision? Kristine keeps saying do it, and even though i am around 5k upside down in the charger, with the price of the Boxster, my payments will actually go down some...tough choice...

Boxster is definitely fun...and just watching them at the autocrosses makes me certain my next car will be mid-engine! I can't be without a 944 though...so ide need both...
Boxster over a Charger...i am biased towards the Porsche. Just like any Porsche, they have their known issues. If you feel you can live with it and take care of it right, go have a blast! PPI first!

If you don't need the usability of the Charger (aka, a trunk and backseat space), I'd ditch it. The boxsters are hella fun, great drivers cars.
..the Chargers? Well I'm still not sure exactly what they have.

I've also heard the 2.5 boxster engines are underpowered, but you can't really go wrong with a mid-engine convertible. You have a 951 for speed, so I guess you don't really need a 2.7. If the idea is to save some money with a nice car, then this looks like a good deal. Have you considered low-mileage 968s? They would cost about the same or less than this boxster.

If you want equivalent fun, about the same price or less- Check into a TT. They are cheaper to purchase and insure as a Boxster, and allot of the same fun factor- and it's a Porsche cousin!
DRIVE BOTH and think about it..
Bust of luck buddy- tough choice. If it were me and my cash- I'd stay away from the early boxsters and get a TT in a heartbeat..

So 1 944 spec car and 2 parts cars? Or 1 race, 1 street, 1 parts?
