You may also want to have a spare DME relay on hand, maybe a tire plug kit, extra alternator belt, and some fuses.

Examine the tires, belts and hoses for wear. Have extra oil and antifreeze available. MAke sure all of the lights work. Plan alternate routes in case you have to detour.

I know you said you were flying out, maybe pickup some of the stuff near Rock (oil, antifreeze, belt)?

Alright, so I will be sleeping in the hatch and stick to the rest stops in OH and Schaumberg. If I speed it will not be in the Ohio turnpike. And I will not hook up the radar detector until I have left VA.

The route has changed from taking I-90 to taking I-294 around chicago.

Tools/parts I will bring are:
Spare DME relay
metric socket and wrench set
Extra alternator belt
Extra fuses
Screw drivers
Crescent wrench

Also bringing:
AAA card
cell phone

Buying when I get there:
Oil
Antifreeze

Fred I appreciate the offer. I may have to take you up on that if I break down in that area.

Thanks All

Nothing wrong with Joliet, in fact, you are just right down the road from my place there!

Get an atlas type book of maps, or get maps of each state through AAA. Mapquest is OK, but sometimes it misses some major roads, or routes you through high traffic areas. Sometimes, you want a real map to plan detours and such around big cities. You definitely don't want to be driving around Chicago, Cincinatti, or Pgh during rush hours. I94 around Gary, IN is really bad around rush hours, too.

The Ohio Turnpike is excellent; the rest stops are open 24 hours, well lit, and well used. Never had a problem there and have napped in the car when I was a poor college student

PA is pretty much the same way, but be sure all your lights are working. Ya probably won't want to be driving in the mountains at night unless the yellow 944 headlights have been upgraded - or at least, keep to the speed limits.

You may want to get some phone numbers of Rennlisters who live near/along your route just in case.

If for some reason you would happen to break down in WI I can help you out. Let me know and I'll PM you my number.

First, ditto on "avoid Gary". In fact, I'd make sure the 'air recirculate' button worked before I drove anywhere near it...phew. Otherwise, pretty much any suburb north and west (i.e. once you've left 294 for 90) is a fine place to stay.

Second, it's possible that through some miracle they've finished, but last time I checked, I-80 across the south of Chicago was under heavy construction. I'd say avoid it, but the only way to do that is I-74 (72?), which is well out of your way. Pray for good weather for that bit.

Last, keep in mind that many of the highways through Chicago are TOLL roads. If you take 90/94 into town, you'll need $2 (at least?) just for the skyway toll. If you take 294 as suggested (and it's a fine suggestion,) you'll hit 4-5 tolls, $.50 each last time I checked. Keep lots of change in the car so you can use the automatic lanes.

Enjoy the drive!

I have made that drive several times. As I am sure you already know, take it easy though Wisconsin.

The construction on I80/94 is very close to being finished and still a better bet than going through the city unless you are traveling through after 9pm. I am located just west of Schaumburg off of I-90. PM me if you need a phone number, I'd be glad to assist if you need anything along the way.

idk if anybody has suggested this, but u may want to bring a jumper box and/or cables, so a dead batt. doesnt mess up your trip. just a precaution that i would take.
