Project completion- putting it all back in one box!
as you all know last september i ran my car at putnam and on the last run of the last day spun the number 2 rod bearing. Finally i have the motor back from the shop and we are starting to assemble her all back again. Heres what we have so far from my almost $2000 i spent...
different crank- polished and crossdrilled
reconditioned rods
new rod connecting nuts
crank scraper
lindsey racing oil pan baffle
new bearings rods/mains
gaskets, filters, flywheel bolts,
968 caster blocks
rennbay ball joint covers
i had D&D racing engines build the bottom end assembly and do the oil pan welding for me. So far we have the balance shafts in, oil cooler housing and all put back on, water pump assembled and i lapped in the valves and put new seals in the head, tomorrow we'll torque it all together and should have the whole shabang done by this weekend. Maybe i can have it done and running before monday!!!

Always great to see progress That is going to be the most powerfull 8V NA on the list
I'm building up my measly 8V 2.0 VW engine for the past few weeks, can't wait to get it back in the bunny.

that's awesome, i am at the exact same stage as you, hoping to have it in this weekend and running by sunday or monday. i just have boxes full of baggies with nuts and bolts (about 85% labeled) i must say im a little scared of not being able to find the right bolt but i took lots of pictures during the tear down so hopefully it will all work out, anyways i wish you lots of good luck with the install

This must be going around! I just put my rebuilt engine (bare block build) back into my 944 N/A last weekend and will finish the instal and hook-up this weekend. Looking for a "start" saturday and the fix leaks and other problems on sunday. Did a "strong" but stock build and I am saving money for a race motor to start very soon after. I have also been working on the chassis for the race car for next spring.

I'm another one in the same boat, although still at the tear down stage. It's the fad right now.
Dan, you mentioned cross drilling the crank. Did you do just number 2 or number 3 as well? Is the baffle necessary for racing? If so, I need more info! Your engine is so clean too. Did you have them steam clean it?

For the next engine I have to rebuild I am using an engine that had a timing belt failure so I was not planning on pulling the crank but replacing the rod bearings and perhaps the rings. Obviously, I will be rebuilding the head. Does anyone know for sure that cross-drilling the crank prevents the rod bearing failures FOR SURE?? I have heard mixed messages on this one.

there are many different opinions on the rod bearing thing and how to fix it. I decided to go with just about all of them. I am using the lindsey baffle kit from lindseyracing.com, and the crank scraper is from paragon-products.com. I had the crank drilled for all of the rod bearings, and the mains are crossdrilled factory. Some say to drill the crank perpendicular instead of straight through, some dont. Ive talked to a few racers who do nothing and just run a half/quart over full when racing and have never had a bearing failure. Im going to do that as well.
The block was hot tanked when they did the work to it, but the rest i cleaned the hard way with a brush and some carb cleaner.
