Default top adjustable konis on an 86. + pics of campecks current activities.

well.
we all know that top adjustable konis wont fit on 86 suspention.....that is...everyone except me and my dad. two weekends ago i spent 4 hours sweating, bleeding, crying, cursing, grinding, and banging on the konis and spindles to get them on.
FINNALY they went on. but only for me to discovery the d*amn holes didnt line up.

so...two weeks and a visit to the machine shop later. Im putting them on.
could I possibly have the only 86 944 with early offset to have adjustable konis?
if anyone else wants to know how. tell the shop to mill 1mm off each side of the spindles for a total of 2mm. then have them elongate the bottom strut bolt hole up about the same length as the original hole.

Hopefully ill be done this weekend. Im waiting for swaybar bushings. enjoy.

LOL, I had a set of spindles milled back in 2000 for that reason! Still have them somewhere, lol. It's an early-late thing.

'87+ struts will not fit '86 and earlier spindles. Struts are too narrow so you have to mill 1mm per side on the spindle and lengthen the bottom bolt hole on the strut so it will mount.
Or you can try to find some Konis that are made for the '86 and earlier and leave the spindles alone.

Yeah, Aribop nailed it. I was going to tell you that you used Konis meant for an 86-later 951 or an 87-later 944. If you need a set of 86 951 spindles when you go to bigger brakes, email me.

You used the wrong koni top adjustables for your n/a car. I have 2 sets of koni top adjustable struts for 83 to 86 n/a cars sitting in the garage. What you are trying to do is adapt a turbo strut onto an early offset non turbo, thus the extra work.

The Koni 8641-1038 Sport is the correct externally adjustable insert for the early cars that had a rebuildable strut (83-86 NA cars and all 924S). As you discovered, fitting the later style sealed struts to the early spindle requires some work. Unless you get a slamming deal on some good used sealed strut Koni's, it may be less money...and certainly less hassle to use the 1038 Sports.
