The Koni 8641-1038 Sport is the correct externally adjustable insert for the early cars that had a rebuildable strut (83-86 NA cars and all 924S). As you discovered, fitting the later style sealed struts to the early spindle requires some work. Unless you get a slamming deal on some good used sealed strut Koni's, it may be less money...and certainly less hassle to use the 1038 Sports.
Plus, if i remember correctly the Koni adjustables for the early offset cars were cheaper than for the late offeset cars.

I got a slamming deal on a complete set (front and rear) of brand new Koni yellows. I could not pass it up. These would go right on my S2 but I have brand new M030 Konis going in mine.
I also have a new set of Huntley Racing coilovers for the rear. I'll be calling you shortly to get some spacers so I can mount these puppies.
