Any idea why my timing belts wants to 'walk' forward?

Default Any idea why my timing belts wants to 'walk' forward?

After the headgasket change, my timing belts like to walk forward on both the crank and cam sprockets. On the Cam sprocket, it comes forward enough that it rubs on the inside of the cover. On the crank sprocket, it comes vey close to touching the balance belt sprocket but does not. I've adjusted it back a few times and retensioned, but it keeps coming forward and rubbing.

Any ideas? I have not removed any of the rollers, sprockets, etc.

Well, I was gonna say rollers... it wasn't doing that before hand? maybe Jesus hates your Porsche...which sucks a lot...

Did you reuse the belts? Did you put them on going the same rotation that they were originally going? Got your cam gear all the way on?

When my "S" belt failed it was because I had reassembled the auto-tensioner incorrectly. I had put the roller on backwards with the lip towards the front of the car. This allowed the belt to "float" across the roller and occasionally rub on the engine, which weakened the teeth and eventually caused them to strip out and leave me stranded in the HEB parking lot.

I did not remove it. Logic would point to a pulley issue but I removed nothing but the cam housing and it's torqued down correctly.

It going the same direction as I didn't pull it off the crank pulley.

that's really odd... the one time I had that happen on the 924S, it was cuz the shop I took it to to check my work on my first timing belt tension, they said I had em on backwards, and flipped em...and then the engine froze due to some dumbass (me) putting the reference sensors touching the fly wheel, thus when I cranked it the damn thing broke off and lodged between the flywheel and bell housing...I took it to a different tech, and he's like "so who the f*ck put your rollers on backwards?" I'm like, "Well, this one shop did, after I had em on the correct way, apparently... I should go get my money back..."

yeah... that was interesting...

All the routing is accurate on the belt, I assume, but how about tension?

The one time it happened to me, the cam sprocket on the crank was on backwards. But... you didn't pull any sprockets or rollers.

if the chords in the belt are bad, they could cause it to walk. Get a new belt and try again.

yeah that or incorrect tension. Lots of engines experience this but guides prevent it from walking off. I see it all the time after I put a new belt on at the shop adn run the car before I fully reassemble everything. I always have to be careful to put the guide on the crank pulley if it doesn't one so it doesn't jump off.

I agree. Most likely, one of the sprocket flanges are on backwards. Check very carefully those flanges on the drive gear on the crank, and the tensioner sprockets. I've also heard, but never seen, that if the head was shaved, and not done parallel (sp) to the block, that this can happen also. I don't know from my limited experiences, if this really can be a cause however.

I had a similar problem, except the belt went back... It turned out the sprockets on the crankshaft were loose, and developed some "wobbly play" on the crankshaft. The timing belt sprocket, the washer and the oil-pump sleeve were worn out.
To check it, hold the timing belt firmly (squeeze it with your hands or something), and try rotating the crank bolt in both directions. If this is your problem, the balance and the timing belt will move with respect to each other by a few degrees.
