okay, I posted a couple days ago about getting a 928 as a daily driver. Today, I found a yellow 914 with a rebuilt engine and perfect interior/exterior (aside from paint) with no rust and a perfect PPI for half the price of the 928...which would be the best daily driver? Thoughts?

you will hate yourself for daily driving a 928. On the other hand, I've taken mine around 14 days out of the 2 weeks and had no complaints....not even with gas guzzling. Just most people dislike the efficiency of a daily driven 928.

Having had recent experience shopping for and driving both, I'd say get a 911. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Seriously though, to me a 914 would be a bad choice as a daily driver. They are really cool cars for sunny weekends or DE events, but I couldn't imagine the daily grind in one. Maintaining one is truly a labor of love from what I've found. Do you really want to be doing valve adjustments every 5k miles? Can you really live with single-speed wipers and a lack of a radio you can hear? How about a really crappy heater and defroster on those cold days this winter?
Plus it would not be perfect for long. They rust. No matter how good you are about drying it off and keeping it out of salt and mud, it will rust. That's just what non-galvanized metal does.
A 928 would be much more livable as a daily driver. One of my coworkers drives his silver '82 928 every day of the year...even through MN winters. Come to think of it, I know a few people that drive them every day around here. Fuel injected, automatic, good stereos, relatively modern climate controls. The list really goes on and on. Hopefully someone experienced will chime in about maintenance. I've heard it's bad, but I've heard that about every Porsche. I'm sure the old rule about keeping up on the routine stuff would apply.
To me there's no comparison...go with the nice 928 you posted on yesterday. They are such big, comfy, powerful cars. When I find a nice Guards over black '86 with a manual transmission it will be coming home with me.

I drove 928's daily for many years...pre recent gas punch. Tons of fun and that V8 rumble soooooo sweeeet. But having done that for so many years I was ready to try the 4 bangers I made fun of (half an engine you know). Sold 85 s to friend and gave 80 Euro S to my Dad. Went from na to Turbo and can't go back, though I do on occassion get to drive my old 28's. So unique looking!

Maintenance will kill you!!!!! In the 44's you have all the room in the world. Expect bloody or cut knuckles checking your power steering fluid. Wide fenders hide your parts.

Why not get a cheaper reliable beater? Why spend the money trying to maintain two Porsches. Get a old Honda, Toyota, Volvo or Ford. Sure, they arent as cool as a Porsche, but parts are readily available and should be easier to work on / maintain.
I dont mean this in a bad way, but for someone who is constantly saying "When i have the funds", maybe you should be looking for something cheaper? I know you just mentioned your new job pays very well...but how good is your paycheck going to hold up against supporting yourself, rent, gasoline and any parts / labor needed to do repairs or maitenence on two Porsches, let alone one?

Two main things I am looking at is gas mileage and affordibility...which one is cheaper on maintanence? Not worried bout getting my hands dirty, more money wise. I just don't want to succumb to japanese econo-cars. Its between this or if I start making enough money at the dealership, a brand new dodge charger...leased of course....
Say what yuo want, but those things are quick and fun, with every creature comfort you could want...:P

Whats so bad about having a Japanese econo-box as a 2nd car. Like i said, beater! Drive the hell out of the econo-box in the snow and rain, leave the nice days to the p-car!

You didn't mention if the 914 was a 1.7, 1.8, or 2.0? That makes a huge difference. If it's anything less than the 2.0, don't bother. I seriously considered a 914 2.0 but ultimately couldn't pull the trigger because it would have been horrid to drive daily, and it should not even be considered as such. I would still love to have one as a weekend car, because they are an absolute blast to drive. Better yet, convert it to a 914/6 and put on some GT flares and you'll have an amazing machine. It would be dumb to buy a 914 to use daily when you have a 951, it should be the other way around. The 928 would be a much better choice, only if you have about $2000/year for maintenance, their electronics were always known for being especially poor. Price aside, you won't find many better GTs than a 928, especially for the money.

well, I will let you guys know the prices...teh 928 is 6000 and the 914 is....drum roll...2000 dollars. Both had excellent PPI's and both drive great. The 914 is a manual 2.0 74 model, and the 928 is an automatic 86 S model.

You'll regret buying a porsche as a daily. I thought about a 944 NA as a daily, then thought better of it. I love my hatch, and I know it will destroy an NA at the track anyway when I get done with it.
