I'm expecting it to hit $4/gal pretty quick here.
A couple months ago I watched a documentary-style movie called Oil Storm, about just this sort of thing happening. It leave me wondering if this hurricane will mirror that movie in any way. It's scary to think about it.

Does your government have the power to freeze prices to avoid massive inflation in the parts of the country struck by the bad weather?

Eyal, a very large percentage of our nation's fuel goes through the New Orleans area. If it gets flattened, many distribution lines go bye-bye. No distribution = supply/demand problems. When supply goes down, demand and prices go up.
And it's about to get the pounding of a lifetime, according to the news. My sister was there...her family fled toTexas yesterday.

Although it was just a movie, make-believe, Oil Storm seemed to be a very well thought out "what if" situation. I don't recall the gas prices in the movie, but it was double-digit if I recall.
I could se it happening.

well at least it's not natural gas - up 20% overnight, main pipeline for the nation is New Orleans - My bet is that $65 oil is here to stay

Yes, absolutly. There is one state I believe who has actually fixed the price of gas (if anybody here is from there, chime in to verify).

The USA needs to catch up to the rest of the world in regards to gasoline prices. It has been far too cheap here for far too long.

Since this is a car forum full of mostly US-members I will probably not be well-liked for that comment.

I paid 3.09 for Premium last night (cost 54.XX to fill my wife BMW). I expect it will go up. Recent surveys show Chicago is now the most expensive city in the country to buy gas (yeah, higher than Cali even).

I test drove a 2006 TDI Jetta on Saturday, there were a line of people waiting to go for a drive behind me!

for gas prices to match, so should the rest of the currency related things. like minimum wage. I think UK gets about (4.85 pounds) 8.75 US dollars / hour for minimum wage. and is supposed to increase to 9.10 in october.

compare that to the US 5.15 an hour. which just recently passed to start increasing over the next few years.

and public transportation is not as widely available here as it is elsewhere.

im not sure how cost of living compares
